Greetings!
When I ask different people what they think it takes to make a "good sailor", I get varying answers. I asked Jerry, our new fleet manager, what his opinion was on the subject. Now, if you've met Jerry, you may know that he was a Quarter Master in the Navy and that he's been sailing for decades, but if you spend a little time with him, you will likely see that he has a certain matter-of-fact sensibility . . . so when I asked him what he thought made a good sailor, his response was simply "Good sailors don't do stupid s___!"
Well, being someone who has done her fair share of stupid . . . stuff . . . I shudder to think that I'm not a good sailor or that I lack the potential of getting there some day. Upon further expansion, Jerry admitted that we ALL do stupid stuff, none of us are immune to it, and that mistakes do happen. Ultimately you need to learn from your mistakes, be cognizant of your surroundings, recognize potential pitfalls and correct for them before they become dangerous, prepare for as much as possible, try to get the best performance out of your boat for whatever point of sail you're on, be adaptable and be safe.
Here's to becoming better sailors and doing less and less stupid . . . stuff!

TODAY'S TIP Look for fun things to do by boat!
Whether
it's for cruising, racing or learning, there's nowhere we'd rather be
than on a boat. It's pretty hard for us to comprehend that there may be
people who don't feel the same way, but believe it or not, some people
may need more encouragement. To entice the landlubber in your life,
keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to get out on the water.
For instance, the other night on the news they were talking about how
the increased seal population on the Farallon Islands has boosted the
shark activity, and the whales are more plentiful than ever - wouldn't
it be a great trip to go see that? If it's racing you
like, the Rolex - Big Boat Series is being held in the Bay on September 18th and 19th. Or if you're into music, the Treasure Island Music Festival is being held on October 16th and 17th, you could get a slip and have
your own private condo right there in the Treasure Island Marina! One last thought - visit the locations that you read about in a book, like traveling the path of the heroine from Isabel Allende's Daughter of Fortune.

NAUTICAL NOGGIN-BOGGLER WINNER!
We selected our winner randomly from the correct answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize!
Congratulations to Steve Hajnal, this week's winner of an attractive Club Nautique hat! Steve, you can wear your hat on our trip to Half Moon Bay! Are you coming?
Steve pictured here with fellow CPM graduate, Hilary. Looks like you're getting a new hat just in time! QUESTION: WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?
Given
that this handsome young man is sailing on a boat about 50 miles
offshore, name at least one thing that's wrong with this picture...
ANSWER: While we would have accepted several answers, we were most concerned about the fact that the model is sticking his hand through the wheel spokes. We are happy to say that the majority of you picked up on that. Just as an aside, the model is not on a Club Nautique boat and he is not a graduate of the Club Nautique program!
Steve's Answer: Noggin boggler: he's got no "croakies" on his sunglasses. That could be a problem because they could fly off in the wind and go overboard. And as he reaches for them in a panic he could follow them over because he's apparently not wearing a tether. But then, where would you hook up a tether if you're not wearing a PFD? But all that is probably a moot point because he'll probably injure his arm first because he's reaching through the wheel and he'll have to sit out the rest of the cruise down below, all safe and sound.

NOGGIN BOGGLER!
Reply to this email with your answer to the following nautical Noggin-Boggler. There is no need to change the subject line, simply hit reply and send your answer. Club Nautique will choose the winner for this week's Boggler randomly from all of the correct entries. Please respond by noon on Monday, September 13th.
QUESTION: In motoring, the "Three Escapes" relies on wind awareness in conjunction with the running light sectors. You're driving a single screw vessel with a right hand prop and when in reverse, your boat walks to port. Consider that the wind is coming from sectors A, B or C, match the sector with the best escape:
- Three point turn
- Back and Fill
- Back Down
NOTE! If you don't know the answer to this, you may want to consider our Motoring Clinic this weekend! This week's prize: a Hat Clip from the Club Nautique Pro Shop
Members can win a FREE pass to Hump Night by submitting a well researched Boggler that we publish. Your Boggler should be nautically themed, fun and not easily "google-able". Happy Boggling!
