Greetings!
We don't believe in superstition - we've heard it's bad luck. So the fact that this coming Friday will be Friday the 13th doesn't faze us at all. Well, not really... okay, maybe a little. We certainly won't be going around breaking mirrors and we will definitely not be walking under any ladders. There are abundant nautical superstitions, but most are nothing that spilling some wine on the deck or ritualistic dancing won't fix.
Whatever your beliefs, you may respect the fact that there is a certain pull in the universe to equalize the most brazen of her challengers. Just ask the guy who said "God himself couldn't sink this ship" about the Titanic.
So tread lightly on Friday! Stay out of the path of black cats, don't step on any cracks and just to be sure, pack some WHITE wine in your sail bag.
Happy Friday the 13th!

TODAY'S TIP DON'T FORGET TO REEF!!! It's an oldie but goodie and we can't stress it enough. In the stronger winds of summer this simple procedure will keep your boat more balanced and your ride more enjoyable! Don't get knocked on your ear - REEF! On most boats it's good to reef once the true wind builds to speeds of 15 to 20 knots. It's probably time to reef your sails if your angle of heel is too great, you have excessive weather helm, your boat is rounding up in the puffs, there are widespread white caps, other boats around you are reefed or your crew is uncomfortable. Once you reef your boat will sail flatter, faster, under more control and with less likelihood of breaking gear. |

NAUTICAL NOGGIN-BOGGLER WINNER!
We selected our winner randomly from the correct answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize!
Congratulations to this week's winner of a handy hat clip, Ryan Bruington!
QUESTION:
Who won the 1980 World Series? Why, the Philadelphia Phillies - of course! I digress... the real question from last week was: Everyone
has learned about red and green lateral buoys but what is the purpose
of a yellow buoy? There are very few in the San Francisco Bay. Identify
the location and specific purpose of the yellow buoy in the picture. This week's prize: a worth-its-weight-in-gold Hat Clip from the Club Nautique pro shop
ANSWER: The buoy that was shown in last week's Noggin Boggler is known as a Special Mark. Special marks are one of five types of marks used in the IALA buoyage system. The other four are lateral marks, safe water marks, isolated danger marks and cardinal marks (not currently used in the U.S.). Here is what the Light List says about Special Marks:
Special Marks are not intended to assist in navigation, but rather to alert the mariner to a special feature or area. The feature should be described in a nautical document such as a chart, Light List, Coast Pilot or Notice to Mariners. Some areas that may be marked by these aids to navigation are spoil areas, pipelines, traffic separation schemes, jetties, or military exercise areas. Special marks are yellow in color and, if lighted, display a yellow light.
The particular mark that was shown in the Noggin Boggler is about 2 nm
southwest of the marina at Ballena Bay. It marks the western limit of
General Anchorage No. 9, separating it from Explosives Anchorage No.
12. Here is its description in the Light List:

CAUGHT ON CAMERA
Thanks to Rod for sending in photos of a great day out sailing with Bob, Jean and Rich. Looks like an awesome day!
Bob at the helm.
Rich caught in a rare moment - actually NOT smiling! What is going on with the world?! He must be focused on some traffic or something. Jean shows off her beautiful smile.
"On Saturday, six of us left Sausalito, sailed through Raccoon Straits, under the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge and into San Pablo Bay. We went past China Camp, then headed East toward the Carquinez Bridge before returning to CN for a great Barbecue.
One of the things that I like about Club Nautique's Charter Share events is that on all the ones I have been on there has been at least one CPM qualified person. They have provided many pointers to improve my sailing. This time was no exception. Michael and Ryan showed us how to reef during a tack to minimize loss of time." - Konrad Sosnow
Thanks for sharing the kind words and the photos Konrad! It's always great to hear that folks are enjoying sailing and learning from one another as they go!
Andrew at the helm.
Dave, Lynn and Mike enjoy the ride.
Ryan and Andrew kickin' back.
Thanks to Instructor, Dan Marshall, for sharing his photos from a very busy weekend. From Basic Keelboat to Basic Cruising then an enjoyable after-class sail.
In their Basic Keelboat class, Mike, Lynne, Jeff and Shela get to enjoy sailing on a bigger boat. During Basic Cruising, fellow instructor, Ted Strand, stands by while Steve practices steering and Chris is ready for action! Dan keeps warm on his morning trip back to the dock. |
