Greetings!
What did we do before the internet and cell phones? Before these handy tools came along, how did we answer important questions that came up while sailing? Questions like, who were the two bad guys in The Apple Dumpling Gang? Or, which baseball team won the World Series in 1980? Okay, maybe conversations on your boat aren't quite so random but you get the picture - we now have more available access to information.
Electronic devices have become commonplace and get more and more advanced every day. From tides and currents to anchorages and marinas, there's an app for that! Of course we realize that no electronic device is going to replace good old fashioned seamanship and know-how, but there is nothing wrong with utilizing all the tools that are available.
There is an opening in our Radar/GPS class this coming weekend. Get on board and learn how to utilize this valuable tool.

TODAY'S TIP Thanks to Paul Koenig Download apps to your mobile device to help with navigation. Apps for your mobile device can help with aids to navigation. A local area map can be purchased for just a few bucks or you may be able to find a free version. There is a GPS chip in most new phones. Your phone uses cell to rapidly narrow in on where you are, then GPS to refine your location. Without cell service, you can still get a fix. The MotionX app downloads maps on demand over the cell data network. If you are offshore, it won't work unless you preload maps, currently only generic maps. There is an iPad version that supports offline maps, including a beta version of NOAA maps. Navionics has offline maps so you pay for the map to be put onto your iPhone. You can also use it to keep track of where you went on your sail and send it to your friends! Do you have a favorite app? Let us know. We love to share!

NAUTICAL NOGGIN-BOGGLER WINNER!
It appears that we stumped you this week!
QUESTION: If you're sailing in "The Slot" and
beating upwind towards the Golden Gate Bridge in a typical westerly
wind, you will experience a persistent geographical wind shift. Will it
be a lift or a header? For full credit and to be eligible for our prize
you must also explain why this is so!
ANSWER: When wind enters the Bay from the Pacific, the wind's streamlines are bunched together at the Golden Gate where the gap between shores is narrowest. Once inside the Bay, and in the region referred to as "The Slot", the wind begins to fan out and its streamlines diverge. The effect of this is to produce a continuous lift as you sail across "The Slot", regardless of which tack you are on. You can see this in the picture, where boat B is lifted compared to boat A.
This is a geographic effect and is very different from the lifts that are produced by puffs. The same effect can be found at the east end of Racoon Strait, or any area downwind of a channel where the wind has been squeezed between two land masses.
