Greetings!
In honor of July 4th we would like to reflect on independence and freedom. Freedom can come in many forms; mostly we think of it as freedom from oppression, but the kind of freedom we see most frequently here at Club Nautique is freedom from limitations. Besides the very real, physical representation of casting your lines off the dock and being free to roam the open sea, there is a more powerful, independence that comes from learning to sail and recognizing that you have gained the confidence and know-how to pull away from the dock and sail freely into the sunset!
"I want to relate a story by way of sending a thank you to everyone at CN. I was talking with a colleague last week and he asked where we went on vacation. When I told him we were sailing in the BVI, he asked with an air of incredulity, 'By yourselves? Competently?' I made a joke of answering of course, 'no one drowned, nothing sank,' but later, I realized it was something of a miracle. Eighteen months ago we hardly knew how to tack. And here we were sailing a 41 footer to eight islands in the Caribbean, with confidence and joy. So thanks to everyone at Club Nautique for making that possible!" Club Nautique Member - Roger Rosner
We hope you have a wonderful 4th of July!

SPOTLIGHT ON FIREFLY! When we asked John Kuony, the owner of Firefly, one of our offshore equipped Hunter 36s located in Alameda, what makes her special? John had plenty to talk about... "Because I'd love to see more extended charters on her, when I ordered her we ordered an extra freezer/refrigerator to provide more cold storage for extended trips. We installed a fresh water head to keep the interior smelling new. We have placed several pillows aboard for our charterers' comfort as well as equipped her with numerous portable fans, wind scoops, flat screen TV, stereo DVD system and a varied music and movie collection." He also told us that for charters of three days and longer he will include a nice hard bottom, easy to tow and row dinghy, a cockpit awning and a BBQ grill at no additional charge! He's even considering allowing the use of a cruising spinnaker depending on experience. Sounds like the perfect boat to take up to the Delta or that cruise to Santa Cruz! Thanks for sharing your beautiful boat with us John and Janine!

TODAY'S TIP Plan your Firework viewing in advance! Do a little research to plot out the optimal spot to view fireworks. Search the internet for websites that will have information about the positions of barges, areas that are restricted and possible tips for the best places to anchor. Also remember that it gets cold out there on the water at night; be sure to pack a few extra blankets, fleeces and caps to keep your crew happy and warm. FIREWORKS! NOGGIN BOGGLER Reply to this email with your answer to the following nautical Noggin-Boggler. There is no need to change the subject line. Club Nautique will randomly select a winner from all correct responses received by noon on Monday, July 5th.
QUESTION:
A big part of being independent on a sailboat is casting off the lines and heading out to the open sea. At Club Nautique, we recommend that one of the first things that you do to prepare you for that independence is to detach the power cord during your pre-cruise check. Why do we recommend that?
This week's prize: A hat clip from the Club Nautique pro-shop.
