TODAY'S TIP Courtesy of Nick Tarlson If the Coast Guard boards you, be courteous and helpful to avoid delays and inconvenience.
Inspection by the Coast Guard Auxiliary can get you a decal for you boat indicating that you are in compliance with Coast Guard regulations. This won't necessarily stop you from getting boarded, but it is an indication that you are a conscientious boater.
In the event the Coast Guard does decide to board you, assume that they are serious and do not try to talk them out of it. Be friendly and make it as easy as possible for them to come aboard. Remember that the Coast Guard authority on the water far exceeds normal law enforcement and that no "probably cause" is necessary for a Coast Guard boarding.
Most of the boarding teams are made up of Petty Officers. They will have their name on their shirt or life jacket, so proper military address would be "Petty Officer Jones". It's also fine to address them as "Sir" or "Ma'am", but don't address a woman as "Sir" as they did on Battlestar Galactica!
Know where your ship's papers are. Club Nautique boats have all of their papers in the charter manual on each boat. Keep a copy of your charter agreement, as that is the only thing connecting you as skipper to the boat. Be familiar with the location and use of all lifesaving equipment, especially lifejackets, fire extinguishers, and pyrotechnic flares.
You should also be aware that there are certain conditions under which the Coast Guard is authorized to terminate your voyage immediately and require you to remain in port until the hazardous condition is corrected. These include: - Insufficient number or type of lifesaving equipment, including life jackets. Note that you must have life jackets that fit the passenger, including small children.
- Inadequate fire fighting equipment.
- Excessive volatile fuel or vapors in the bilges.
- Instability from overloading, improper loading, or lack of adequate freeboard.
- Inoperable bilge system.
- Intoxication of the master or individual in charge.
- Lack of adequate operable navigation lights during periods of reduced visibility.
- Missing or inoperable watertight closures, flooding or uncontrolled leakage in any space.

NAUTICAL NOGGIN-BOGGLER WINNER!
We selected our winner randomly from the correct answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize!
This week's prize was a box of See's Candies! Our winner is Rod Witel and his sweet Momma, Mary Witel.
QUESTIONS: Whether your mom encourages you to pursue your dreams of sailing or she
gets out there herself, tell us why your mom is the best sailing mom on
the Bay! Send in a photo of mom along with a short description of why
you think your mom should hold the title of "Best Sailing Mom!"
Rod and His mom, Mary - We'll forgive their taste in sports teams.
ANSWERS: My mama always said, "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Ok, maybe it wasn't my mama but you can't dispute that Mrs. Gump was her son's greatest nautical proponent.
What's that you say? Nautical? Well just look at how successful Forrest became after he took to the sea and weathered the great storm. Without his mama's auspices we might never have know the culinary delights of Bubba Gump Shrimp! Maybe the sea is like a box of chocolates and we're all just pieces floating around. We come in all shapes and sizes; nutty, hard as toffee, soft centered and even salty (you know who you are). We're a recipe gathered from around the world and from all walks of life who blend together with hopes of being one with the wind and the water.
Neptune wouldn't be Neptune without his mother, or Forrest without his .. nor I without mine.
Here's to all mothers who helped their sons and daughters become the people and sailor they always wanted to be. Rod Witel "I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floatin' around accidental-like on a breeze. But I, I think maybe it's both." - Forrest Gump

CHARTERBOAT OWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Get Lucky!
Lucky G off of Ballena Bay during a Basic Powerboating Class
 | Have you been waiting for the right time to own a boat? Your time may have arrived! Club Nautique's 32' Nordic Tug, Lucky G, is for sale for the very attractive price of $240,000. Club Nautique wants to keep the boat in the fleet so we are bringing this opportunity to the attention of all of our readers. Here are some reasons why this may be the time for you to buy a boat: - Lucky G has some of the best charter performance of the entire Club Nautique fleet.
- Congress recently extended, through year's end, an increase in the Section 179 Tax Deduction to $250,000. This means that the full purchase price of the boat can be deducted from your taxes this year.
- Club Nautique is waiving its customary "charter placement fee".
- Even though Lucky G is a 2006 model year, it has been professionally maintained to the highest of standards for Club Nautique's charter use, so you can get a pre-owned boat while being confident that you won't encounter any surprises.
- Owning this boat will give you a place to stay or a yacht to use on the Bay in the most affordable way, ever.
Every one of Club Nautique's powerboating students start on this boat and they universally agree on what a great boat she is. If you have ever given thought to purchasing a yacht but felt the timing or economy was not right to do so, let's discuss it. Please direct any questions you may have to me personally.
