Greetings!
It's been said that the first sailboat race happened on the day that the second sailboat was launched. Whether you're a racer or not, you can't help but notice when another boat outperforms yours. And even if racing isn't for you, you're likely interested in the undeniable fact that the ability to point 1 degree higher, over a 60 mile course, can put you a whole mile closer to your destination! That could help you get the last mooring ball!
Getting the best performance out of your sailboat takes skill and finesse. Racing can help hone your skills and makes you more acutely aware of the effect of proper sail trim.
There are many different opportunities to go racing. Whether you're joining Club Nautique for our racing program or jumping on a friend's boat for beer can races, stay alert and pay attention; you are bound to learn a boatload!

TODAY'S TIP
Tack on a header! Watch other boats upwind of you to identify wind shifts and use them to your advantage. There are two different types of wind shifts: headers and lifts. A header forces you to steer away from the wind. A lift allows you to steer closer to the wind. Consider that a header on one tack is a lift on the other. If you see boats ahead of you on the same tack getting "headed", you can anticipate the shift and be prepared to tack once the shift reaches your boat. When the header reaches your boat and causes you to steer down, take that opportunity to tack over and enjoy the advantage of the lift on the opposite tack!

NAUTICAL NOGGIN-BOGGLER WINNER!
We selected our winner randomly from the correct answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize!
Congratulations to this week's winner of The Mariner's Guide to the Rules of the Road from The
Maritime Institute
WARREN WHITE!
QUESTION:
Sometimes talking to the bridge of a ship is the best course of
action, either to let them know of your position or situation, or to
determine their intentions. Of course, to talk to a ship you have to
know which channel(s) they are monitoring on the radio. For this
week's prize, name all of the VHF channel(s) that commercial vessels
are required to monitor inside San Francisco Bay while participating
in the Vessel Traffic Service.
ANSWER:
Commercial vessels are required to monitor channels 13 (bridge to bridge) & 14 (vessel traffic). They are not required to monitor channel 16.

INSIDE THE INSIDE PASSAGE
DON'T MISS THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY! SIGN-UP DEADLINE - APRIL 15
The Inside Passage is wild and complex. Its waters are filled with islands and rocks of all sizes until it is often reduced to narrow winding passages. Yet it is protected from the outside ocean, initially by Vancouver Island and later by a complex of larger Islands. On its inside, deep fiords cut into the Coastal Range, ending at some of British Columbia's tallest mountains. No other stretch of the Inside Passage offers so much wilderness and so many wildlife opportunities. Its few scattered and remote human populations are still mostly native villages with their own Northwest culture. Traveling up the Inside Passage you will develop advanced navigational skills as you discover places still less explored.
Join Dolphin Charters and Club Nautique on this educational adventure onboard Delphinus, a 50' single screw trawler. Learn and practice navigation, piloting, docking and crewing. Our cruise starts from Port Townsend, WA, one of the most popular destinations in the San Juan Islands. We'll travel a long and rewarding passage through the famous Inside Passage, passing through Discovery Passage and Johnstone Straits, all the way to Ketchikan, AK.
Trip Dates: May 29 - June 7 Sign-up deadline - April 15, 2010

Club Nautique has developed a new and exciting race program! We have ordered two new spinnakers and are putting them on a couple of our Alameda Colgates for some tight match racing fun between April 2 and September 3. We will be racing with the Ballena Bay Yacht Club every other Friday night, but with two identically outfitted boats in each race we will also have the excitement of our own race-within-a-race! There are a total of twelve races in the series, which we are dividing into three four-race mini-series. There will be a race-seasoned Club Nautique instructor onboard to coach you and give you tips, but you will be driving, trimming and calling the tactics.
Racers must be BC certified. No spinnaker experience required.

CALIFORNIA IS IN SAN FRANCISCO!

Some very courageous souls took
the challenge of a lifetime and got onboard the vessel California
to race in various legs of the Clipper Around the World Race. They are school teachers,
lawyers and Club Nautique members, Max Spring and Chris Wolf! They limped into the Bay this past Sunday after a very challenging leg resulting in a dis-masting and an injured crew member.
From the California: During the 5,680 mile race from Qingdao, China to San Francisco, the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race experienced a series of fierce Pacific storms with winds in excess of 70 knots. In one such storm, the Californian entry was rolled through 120 degrees which left a crew member injured, the yacht dismasted and all communication equipment out of action.
Thanks to the assistance of the US Coastguard, their fellow competitors and the Master of the merchant ship 'Nord Nightingale', the crew of 'California' were able to evacuate their injured team mate, deal with the aftermath of their dismasting and construct a jury rig which has allowed them to complete a 2,000 mile journey to the safety of harbor.
Visit their website for more information.

CHARTERBOAT OWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Get Lucky!
Lucky G off of Ballena Bay during a Basic Powerboating Class
 | Have you been waiting for the right time to own a boat? Your time may have arrived! Club Nautique's 32' Nordic Tug, Lucky G, is for sale for the very attractive price of $240,000. Club Nautique wants to keep the boat in the fleet so we are bringing this opportunity to the attention of all of our readers. Here are some reasons why this may be the time for you to buy a boat: - Lucky G has some of the best charter performance of the entire Club Nautique fleet.
- Congress recently extended, through year's end, an increase in the Section 179 Tax Deduction to $250,000. This means that the full purchase price of the boat can be deducted from your taxes this year.
- Club Nautique is waiving its customary "charter placement fee".
- Even though Lucky G is a 2006 model year, it has been professionally maintained to the highest of standards for Club Nautique's charter use, so you can get a pre-owned boat while being confident that you won't encounter any surprises.
- Owning this boat will give you a place to stay or a yacht to use on the Bay in the most affordable way, ever.
Every one of Club Nautique's powerboating students start on this boat and they universally agree on what a great boat she is. If you have ever given thought to purchasing a yacht but felt the timing or economy was not right to do so, let's discuss it. Please direct any questions you may have to me personally.

NOGGIN BOGGLER
QUESTION:
On Sunday we had a cold front pass over us with its attendant wind and rain. It's typical for the wind to veer (shift in a clockwise direction) during a frontal passage like this, and Sunday was a perfect example. In the morning the wind was coming from the southeast, but when the front came through in the afternoon the wind piped up and veered to the south.
If you had been sailing offshore Sunday morning toward a destination that was southeast of you and 25 miles away (about 4 hours), you could have expected the wind to veer to the south mid-way through your trip. What sailing strategy would you adopt to take best advantage of an expected wind shift in this situation?
Please restrict your answer to how you could take best advantage of the wind's direction, as opposed to your reefing, heavy weather or storm strategy.
This week's prize: a Portable Dwyer Wind Meter

WILL YOU MARRY ME? - SHE SAID YES!
A romantic day of sailing on the Bay was the perfect setting for Abid Magannam to propose to the lovely Stephanie Bateh. With the backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge, Abid lured Stephanie to the bow to get down on bended knee and pop the question. We were honored to have been a part of their special day!
Congratulations to you both!
"Thank you and the entire staff and especially our skipper, Bryan Chavez, for making this a great day. It was better than we could have hoped for and now we're off to a great start planning our engagement and wedding. I can't thank you all enough for such personal and courteous service on one of the most important days of our new life together. I am very glad we chose Club Nautique."
Regards,
Abid Mogannam and Stephanie Bateh
