Greetings!
I was brought up to believe that I could do anything. I never even considered that there were things I couldn't do or wouldn't be "good at" simply because of my gender. Not that I needed to prove anything... in my mind, it was just a matter of fact.
It had never occurred to me that gender roles played a part in sailing. So when it came to all-female events, I typically shied away. I simply didn't see the need for it. When I was asked to skipper a boat for a Women's Sailing Seminar, I reluctantly agreed to participate. I was pleasantly surprised... I may have gotten more out of it than the other women on my boat.
Empowering and encouraging people to sail is one of my favorite parts of this job. Empowering and encouraging women, who didn't think they could do this inspires me to keep on spreading the word... "you can do this!"
See you out on the water! Marianne Armand

TODAY'S TIP
Establish expectations to earn respect from your crew. As a skipper, male or female, you are responsible for the safety of your boat and your crew. A calm and confident skipper can gain the respect of his/her crew by being succinct about expectations. Start with the pre-cruise check out if your crew is there to help. Give clear directions and whenever possible name specific crew members to carry out tasks. If your crew arrives after you have pre-cruised your boat, be sure to go over safety items. Let them know what to expect if there is a person in the water and make sure that they all have life jackets.

NAUTICAL NOGGIN-BOGGLER WINNER!
We selected our winner randomly from the correct answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize!
Congratulations to this week's winner of a 2010 Tide Log MARK HOWARD!
QUESTION: In coastal waters near an estuary, like the San Francisco Bay,
the ebb may take longer than the flood. Why?
ANSWER: Anyone who attended Wednesday's Tides seminar would have learned that tides are a complex phenomenon and involve many factors. The answer to last week's Noggin Boggler is no exception... These are some of the primary reasons that in coastal waters near an estuary, the ebb may take longer than the flood:
1) During the flood, the kinetic energy of the tidal wave helps to force the water into the estuary. This level of energy is absent during the ebb, thus causing the ebb to take longer.
2) Physical effects in an estuary, such as grass, marsh areas, inlets and other forms of "macro porosity" make the estuary act like a sponge that will absorb water more readily during the flood than it will release it during the ebb.
3) The contribution of any non-tidal water from tributaries into the estuary, such as the Sacramento River into San Francisco Bay, has the effect of producing a net outflow that causes the ebb to persist longer than the flood.
Responses to last week's Noggin Boggler that included any or all of these factors were considered as valid answers for our challenging question.

CORPORATE CORNER
"Do women make better sailors?"
Club Nautique's corporate programs are great for both men and women and can help you learn things about yourselves that you may not have expected. As one of the owners of Club Nautique, I recently decided to take the Basic Keelboat and Basic Cruising classes we offer to experience the quality of our product first hand. What better way to analyze and enhance the program? I have been boating the better part of 4 decades, circumnavigated on the USS Inchon, cruised my personal 47 foot yacht from Connecticut to San Diego, and made 11 round trips between San Diego and the Bay. Two things I learned from Club Nautique's classes: first, "I had no idea how much I didn't know" and second, "Women appear to make better sailors".
Is it possible that women make better decisions on a boat because they don't have testosterone driving them to prove something? Many men feel that they can control even the most aggravating situations, even bad sea and weather, and they tend to respond impulsively. Some people have said that men do not seem to be as attentive in class, and subsequently prefer to try things from the seat of their pants.
Women appear to listen more carefully, seem to be much more focused on what they are doing, and perform activities in the manner in which they have been instructed. One Club Nautique instructor reported that of all the classes he had taught, the student with the best command skills was a woman kindergarten teacher, not a male Marine Drill Sergeant.
All this goes to show that sometimes the people who are best for a job aren't the people that we expect. In Club Nautique's corporate team building programs we take advantage of a new and different environment to reveal things about you and your team that you might never have imagined.
Please ask your employers to inquire about our Club Nautique corporate programs. You and your team will experience one of the most fun, revealing, and positive team building activities with which your company can reward it's hard working employees and muscle-build its team.
Women and men, we welcome sharing your comments to this subject in upcoming issues.

LET'S GO RACING!
Club Nautique has developed a new and exciting race program! We have ordered two new spinnakers and are putting them on a couple of our Alameda Colgates for some tight match racing fun between April 1 and September 3. We will be racing with the Ballena Bay Yacht Club every other Friday night, but with two identically outfitted boats in each race we will also have the excitement of our own race-within-a-race! There are a total of twelve races in the series, which we are dividing into three four-race mini-series. There will be a race-seasoned Club Nautique instructor onboard to coach you and give you tips, but you will be driving, trimming and calling the tactics.
Racers must be BC certified. No spinnaker experience required.

CHARTERBOAT OWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Get Lucky!
Lucky G off of Ballena Bay during a Basic Powerboating Class
 | Have you been waiting for the right time to own a boat? Your time may have arrived! Club Nautique's 32' Nordic Tug, Lucky G, is for sale for the very attractive price of $240,000. Club Nautique wants to keep the boat in the fleet so we are bringing this opportunity to the attention of all of our readers. Here are some reasons why this may be the time for you to buy a boat: - Lucky G has some of the best charter performance of the entire Club Nautique fleet.
- Congress recently extended, through year's end, an increase in the Section 179 Tax Deduction to $250,000. This means that the full purchase price of the boat can be deducted from your taxes this year.
- Club Nautique is waiving its customary "charter placement fee".
- Even though Lucky G is a 2006 model year, it has been professionally maintained to the highest of standards for Club Nautique's charter use, so you can get a pre-owned boat while being confident that you won't encounter any surprises.
- Owning this boat will give you a place to stay or a yacht to use on the Bay in the most affordable way, ever.
Every one of Club Nautique's powerboating students start on this boat and they universally agree on what a great boat she is. If you have ever given thought to purchasing a yacht but felt the timing or economy was not right to do so, let's discuss it. Please direct any questions you may have to me personally.

NOGGIN BOGGLER
QUESTION: A man and his daughter were spending the day in Sausalito when they decided to go for a sailboat ride. When they arrived at the boat the Captain looked at the girl and said, "You go for free." When the other staff asked why the girl should go for free the Captain declared, "Because she's my daughter." How is this possible? This week's prize: Your choice of his or her sunglasses from the Club Nautique pro shop.

SAILING IN VALENCIA By Corinna Stolp
FOR THE LOVE OF SAILING
Those of us who love sailing know that February 14th, 2010, was more than just another Valentine's Day. It will go down in history as the day BMW Oracle Racing reclaimed the America's Cup! What an amazing experience to see the 33rd AC in Valencia, Spain. It is even more amazing when you get to travel with the US team, have access to the base, and get a front row seat on the water to one of the most extreme events in the history of sailing. There are so many stories I would like to tell, but since I signed an non-disclosure agreement...
What I can tell you, is that you should be very proud of our team. No one knew exactly how the boats were going to perform on race day. Watching the initial dial up in the first race was absolutely heart-stopping! Jimmy "Pit bull" Spithill lived up to his name and took our boat up on one pontoon faster than Team Alinghi could say "trimaran", forcing a penalty against the Swiss team. From there, it was a continuous roller coaster of emotions with various lead changes. Ultimately, our team performed well enough to beat Alinghi and win the 33rd America's Cup. I am proud to say, I was there to see it!
