For those of us at Club Nautique, it's hard to remember what it was like before we knew how to sail - before we knew what lines to pull, or the feel of a boat leaning to the wind with the waves slapping against the hull. But it isn't hard at all to remember why we so quickly fell in love!
Years later, our hearts still beat a little faster as we untie the dock lines and head out on the Bay. There's a magical moment when you turn off the engine and start to feel the wind on your face as the boat slices through the water. If you've been there you know what we're talking about.
You can give this experience to that special someone on your list! Club Nautique lessons or gift certificates are gifts that will be remembered for a lifetime! Or, if you've been watching dreamy-eyed from the shore, now may be the time to give yourself the gift of sailing. With its lighter winds and flatter seas, winter is an ideal time to learn to sail on San Francisco Bay.

Today's Tip
|
|
Sailors and powerboaters love being on the water. If they aren't spending the day on the water, they're probably daydreaming about it. If you have a photo of the sailor in your life behind the wheel, at the tiller, or relaxing in the cockpit, mount it in a frame for a great holiday gift! To really wow them, add in a Club Nautique gift certificate or lessons!

QUESTION:
You are sailing at night with a steady course and speed.
In the distance you see lights that appear to be another vessel on the
water. You identify the target on your radar. What features of your
radar would you use to help you determine if there is a risk of
collision?
ANSWER: A risk of collision exists if the bearing to another vessel stays constant while the range (distance) to the vessel is decreasing. Most radar units have two features to help you determine if there is a risk of collision. These are the electronic bearing line (EBL) and the variable range marker (VRM). To use these, set your EBL and VRM over your target. Then note whether the range is decreasing while the bearing stays constant. If so, Watch Out! You are probably on a collision course and need to take appropriate action.
Besides EBL and VRM features, most Club Nautique boats (sail and power) are equipped with a radar function called MARPA that does the tracking for you. This makes it easy to track many targets at one time. MARPA is an acronym for Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid.
In a typical navigation scenario the navigator activates the MARPA function and uses the radar's cursor to acquire a target. The radar then automatically monitors the selected target and provides vital information back to you regarding the target's CPA (Closest Point of Approach), TCPA (Time to Closest Point of Approach), the target's speed and the target's direction (its course). In addition, the MARPA function will qualify each target as Safe or Dangerous and sound an alarm if the target enters your safety zone.
If this interests you and you would like to learn more, give us a call. Sign up for our January 16 Radar Clinic or come charter a boat. Our staff will be happy to orient you to our equipment.

QUESTION:
As a holiday gift to Club Nautique and its members, Tiny Tim came to decorate the marina at Ballena Bay, in Alameda. He came early Saturday morning on the 19th of December, and at 7:20 am had everything complete except for his final decoration: A star that he planned to place on top of the piling at the end of the dock. But even on his father's shoulder, Tiny Tim's reach was still forty inches away from the top of the piling. When was Tiny Tim finally able to place the star on the piling?
