Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on things for which we are thankful. We work at a sailing school and charter company so we don't have to look very far to find things to be thankful for. Facilitating people's dreams is so very satisfying, and we get rewarded almost daily.
Our rewards come in many forms. There's the I-tattooed-all-my-man-overboard-drills smirk, the I-understand-the-points-of-sail smile, the we-had-the-most-amazing-day-on-the-bay beam and the I-safely-navigated-to-the-Farallones-and-back grin. However your facial expression rewards us, rest assured we will be radiating back our we-are-so-proud-to-share-in-your-adventure glow.
Thank you to all of you! We hope you have a joyful and safe Thanksgiving.

Today's Tip
|
|
Keep a journal of your sailing adventures. It's always a good idea to document your hours on the water but have you considered documenting what you've learned? Take a moment after every voyage to jot down the new things that you've learned. Beginners will be amazed at the progress they are making and Old Salts will be surprised to see that they are still learning new things. Years from now, you'll be glad you made the effort!
Documenting your sea time is also an important first step if you ever want to get your captain's license.

QUESTION: When you stop cooking with a propane stove or oven you can leave pressurized gas in the lines that could eventually leak into the boat creating an explosion hazard. What simple procedure can be followed every time you turn off the flame to reduce this hazard?
ANSWER:To keep from leaving pressurized propane in your lines, turn off the gas using the solenoid switch and let the gas burn out at the stove or oven before you turn off the burner. This will take only a few seconds.
The alternate method of burning the propane out of the lines after closing the tank valve will work, but is less practical. This is because of the inconvenience of having to go to the propane locker and because of the time that it takes to burn out the gas, which can be several minutes. The gas between the solenoid and the stove is at a pressure of less than .5 PSI, and so will burn out very quickly. Meanwhile, the gas on the tank side of the regulator can be at a pressure of 150 PSI or more, and so even a short length of hose can store a lot of gas.

Nautical Noggin-Boggler

Reply to this email with your answer to the following nautical Noggin-Boggler. There is no need to change the subject line. Club Nautique will randomly select a winner from all correct responses received by end of business on Monday, November 30th.
QUESTION: Recording observations, events and navigational information is a part of good seamanship. A journal is a good place to record personal observations and musings, while a logbook (or log) is used for a vessel's formal record. One of the items that is recorded in the log is the vessel's speed, in knots. The words log (meaning a written record of events) and knot (meaning a nautical mile per hour) both have their origins in a single piece of nautical equipment. What was that piece of equipment and how was it used?

Last Chance To Slash Your '09 Tax Bill With A New Charter Yacht
Lower Your Tax Bill With A New Sailboat!
With less than 7 weeks before the end of the year, there's not much time left to lower your 2009 taxes by putting a boat into charter. The good news is, Club Nautique needs new boats for their charter fleet and Cruising Yachts has a few boats left in stock that fit the bill and can be delivered before the year end deadline. #1 on Club Nautique's wish list is the Hunter 33 and there just happens to be one on sale. The potential savings to be had through charter boat ownership versus private ownership of the Hunter 33 are incredible!
