The holidays are just around the corner and they are a great time for tradition. This year, start some of traditions of your own. Celebrate Thanksgiving on a boat or treat the out-of-town relatives to a sail on Friday to shake off the "turkey haze." In December, take out a boat to view one of the Lighted Yacht Parades in the area. For New Years Eve, how about sailing along the city front and enjoying the fireworks display!

Speaking of traditions, don't miss out on Club Nautique's new winter tradition: Winter Wednesdays. Join us this Wednesday night for "Cooking Aboard" with Lynne Orloff-Jones, the author of Can-to-Pan cookery. Lynne can help you with some great ideas about preparing your holiday meals onboard.

Today's Tip

Sailing TipCooking aboard is a lot of fun. With a little bit of preparation you'll be amazed at how easy it is! All of the Club's boats over 30' have everything you need to cook a gourmet meal to serve a party of six (or more).

Preparation is the key! Once you choose the boat that you're going to charter, check the inventory to see if you have everything you need to cook and serve the meal you have planned. Measure the stove to make sure it will fit what you are planning to cook. You are welcome to visit the boat before your charter, or if you're coming in from out of town we'll be happy to run down with a tape measure for you!

QUESTION:
You are talking on the VHF radio with another vessel that is 25 miles away. Your antenna is permanently mounted at the top of your mast and both vessels are already operating on high power. As your separation from the other vessel increases their signal starts to get faint and cut in and out. What can you do to improve your reception of the other vessel's transmissions?

ANSWER:
Turning down (opening) your radio's squelch will often allow you to hear a weaker transmission. A radio's squelch acts like a filter that only admits stronger signals. This gives you the ability to filter out static and weaker signals that you don't want to hear. But when you need to hear the weaker signals, turning down the squelch will let them pass through. This may also allow some static to come through, so when you're done you will want to turn the squelch back up.

We also received suggestions to reduce the distance to the other boat, by steering in its direction. These answers were not allowed, because in most cases this would be impractical. Similarly, we received suggestions to reduce the boat's heel angle temporarily by luffing the sails, thus making the boat stand more upright. This might briefly offer some improvement to your reception, but is also comparatively inconvenient, and so was not allowed.

QUESTION: When you stop cooking with a propane stove or oven you can leave pressurized gas in the lines that could eventually leak into the boat creating an explosion hazard. What simple procedure can be followed every time you turn off the flame to reduce this hazard?

Last Chance To Slash Your '09 Tax Bill
With A New Charter Yacht

Lower Your Tax Bills With A New Sailboat!

With less than 7 weeks before the end of the year, there's not much time left to lower your 2009 taxes by putting a boat into charter. The good news is, Club Nautique needs new boats for their charter fleet and Cruising Yachts has a few boats in stock that fit the bill and can be delivered before the year end deadline. #1 on Club Nautique's wish list is the Hunter 33 and there just happens to be one on sale. The potential savings to be had through charter boat ownership versus private ownership of the Hunter 33 are incredible!
