We launched our Winter Wednesday seminar series this week with a discussion and travelogue about Cruising in Central America. Joe Brandt and his wife, "The Admiral", entranced a packed clubhouse with visions of heading out the gate and turning left.

This wasn't just a bunch of folks looking at pretty pictures of Baja, Panama, Nicaragua and the like; it was a room full of people who are genuinely interested in cruising. Being around that energy gets you thinking that it really is possible - that your dreams of cruising really can come true. And there it is, once again; we are touched by being even a small part of that journey, and we sit back and think "This job rocks!"
Today's Tip

Sailing TipRemember when you talk on the VHF radio that it is a "party line" and everyone within radio earshot can hear you. Use channel 16 to hail the Coast Guard, Vessel Assist, or other vessels, then switch to a working channel (68, 69, 71, 72). For lengthy or personal communication it's best to use a cell phone. Cell phones are also better for handling maintenance questions with the Club.

QUESTION:

When the wind dropped down to below 10 knots, what did the polite skipper ask of his crew in an effort to keep the boat moving forward?

Solve the following cryptogram* to reveal the correct answer:

* A cryptogram is a block of text which has been rendered unreadable through the use of what is called a "substitution cypher". This means that each letter used in the original text has been substituted with another (G becomes A, F becomes P, etc.). Letter/word positions, spaces and punctuation remain unchanged.

ANSWER:

"Please move to the leeward side of the boat."

NOTE: Some readers pointed out that "Please come to the leeward side of the boat." was also a valid answer, so we accepted that as well.

Coastal Passage Making Corner

One attribute of a good skipper is knowing when to stay in port.  For the first time in our collective memory, we made the decision to cancel a Coastal Passage Making trip. While the wind conditions were expected to be mild, the large predicted swell and surf warnings were elements with which we did not feel comfortable. Our number one priority has always been to keep our students safe, and we felt the risk was too great to attempt a trip out the Gate at any point during the weekend.

The warnings below predicted the worst sea state of the year.

Did we make the right call?

From just inside the gate you could see the mammoth breakers extending out into the middle of the channel. We are confident that we made the right call.

On Wednesday, before the big swell arrived, the crew onboard Anne's Turn slipped safely back through the Gate. They were finishing the last leg of our very successful California Coastal Cruising Adventure.

Thanks to Arnstein for sending in the photos!
