This time of year is always a bit bittersweet. While the daylight takes on a keen intensity, you can't help but notice how effortlessly it gives way to night. But shorter days don't need to darken your enthusiasm. In fact, October brings some of the best sailing - and our favorite events - of the year.
Fleet Week is jetting our way. The Blue Angels roar through our skies Friday, October 9th through Sunday the 11th. We are booked solid on Saturday and there are just a few boats available on Sunday. Members, take advantage of our weekday Member discount, and book a boat for that Friday to enjoy the show! Click here to visit the Fleet Week website.
The Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival brings our yearly rendezvous. Along with Cruising Yachts, we usually end up with over 20 boats heading down the coast together for some "gourd"geous coastal cruising! Click here to learn more.

Today's Tip

| When using your camera on or around boats, be sure to secure the strap around your neck or wrist. You don't want to donate your favorite photo snapper to Davy Jones's locker.

QUESTION: Your bow has entered the slip on your final approach but you have misjudged your drift and are about to hit the corner of the leeward finger, as shown in the picture below. What should you do now?
ANSWER:
Quickly turn to full right rudder and apply a short burst of forward throttle. This will surge the boat forward, while inducing a quick pivot, turning the back of the boat away from danger. The key to using this remedy is to be sure not to do it until the boat's pivot point (usually very close to the mast) is at, or ahead, of the danger point (the corner of the finger).
While it may be tempting to use reverse, the wind is already taking your bow to leeward. No amount of reverse is likely to save you, especially if you have a right hand propeller and the stern is walking to port.

Throughout the weekend we enjoy the hospitality of the easy going folks at the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club. On Saturday, we take in the festival or enjoy local activities like hiking or kayaking. This is one of our favorite events of the year and it's sure to be one of yours!
We are putting together crews and skippers. Cost will depend on the boat and number of people on the charter.
