The concept of Six Degrees of Separation says that if we have one degree of separation from each person we know, and two degrees of separation from each person they know, and so forth, then within six degrees of separation we are connected to every person on earth. But when it comes to Leukemia and blood cancers, many of us are much closer than six degrees of separation from someone, who, at this very minute, is battling for survival. In the United States alone more than 890,000 people have some form of blood cancer. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is endeavoring to help those people win that battle.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society gets much of its financial support from the many fundraising activities that it conducts, including it's Leukemia Cup Regatta Series. San Francisco's Leukemia Cup, coming up this Sunday, September 20th, is the biggest fundraiser of that series. Club Nautique has been involved in the Leukemia Cup for the past three years, and we are proud to be involved again this year. Read more below on how you can participate and help with this fun and worthwhile event.

Coastal Cruising Adventure!
|
| October 25 - November 4th ONLY 2 Seats Left!
Join Club Nautique's California Coastal Adventure Cruise. We will depart from Newport Beach on Oct 25 aboard one of our fully equipped offshore sailing vessels for an exciting cruise around Southern California before venturing north for home.
This will be an advanced trip organized as an educational adventure cruise with the security of a licensed instructor on board. It will be loosely structured, taking advantage of weather, student desires and the ultimate goal of having fun while learning and getting valuable near coastal sailing experience.
Photo by: Rod Witel Some possible destinations include Catalina Island, with its beautiful Avalon Harbor & Two Harbors; Santa Cruz Island, with its incredible caves that you can explore by dinghy; and the many beautiful marinas along the southern coastline, including Marina del Rey, Santa Barbara, Channel Islands Harbor and more.
Photo by: Rod Witel Along the way there will be opportunities to do some great fishing and swimming. Did you know that Southern California has some of the most incredible sea life around? Whales, sharks, dolphins, and sea turtles are just some of the aquatic life that you might see. At times you may think the dolphins are taking the trip along with you. We will navigate the Santa Barbara Channel with its busy big-ship traffic and incredible huge oil rigs. Have you ever caught a glimpse of the phosphorescence or a green flash? Come join us for the experience. After enjoying the warmer Southern California waters, we will put on our foulies and venture around Point Conception, the Cape Horn of the north. There will be some serious sailing, but if time and conditions permit, we can stop in to Monterey Bay and enjoy more incredible sea life, this time on our plates, during a visit to one of their fine dining establishments... Hope you can join us!
This voyage is open to CPM/OPM students and Grads. Ask us about CPM student positions.
CPM Students: $995 (class credit applied) Members: $1095/NonMembers: $1685

Today's Tip Thanks to instructor - Bryan Chavez
|
| When approaching a berth in a cross-wind or current, don't attempt to steer straight into the slip. Instead, aim for a target that brings you in at an angle of 30-45 degrees so that you can more easily compensate for the boat's drift.

Nautical Noggin-Boggler WINNER!
|
|
We selected our winner randomly from the correct answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize!
Congratulations to last week's winner: JASON CANTER In the next photo of Jason, we're sure he'll be sporting his prize, a new Club Nautique Hat. QUESTION:
Jim's Pre-Cruise Bogglers - Answer all 3 During your pre-cruise:
1. You push the engine start button and nothing happens-there's not even a sound. What should you do next?
2. You can't find the first aid kit. What should you do next?
3.You attempt to do your radio check multiple times but you don't hear anything back. What should you do next?
ANSWERS:
1. Check to ensure that the engine start battery is turned on. The key here is that there was no sound. If there was any electrical power, even a weak battery, you would normally at least hear a click.
2. Check the charter manual.
3. Check the volume, squelch and channel settings on your radio.

The Nationwide Automatic Identification System (NAIS) will enable the Coast Guard to identify, track and communicate with marine vessels using the Automatic Identification System (AIS), a maritime digital communication
system that continually transmits and receives vessel data over VHF radio. AIS data collected by NAIS will be combined with
other government intelligence and surveillance data to form a holistic,
overarching view of maritime traffic within or near U.S. and
territorial waters.
Presented by Club Nautique instructor, Thomas Jeremiason. Thomas holds a Coast Guard 100 ton license with radar, sailing and towing endorsements and holds an FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit. Thomas also captains and crews aboard many of the commercial cruise boats in the Bay Area, including Hornblower, USS Potomac and the Red and White Fleet.
