In honor of the upcoming Labor Day weekend we want to salute laborers everywhere. Like you! You work hard. We hope that you enjoy this day in your honor.

Thank goodness for boats that allow us to reward ourselves for our hard work and provide a release from the daily grind. There is something about stepping on a boat that provides almost instant relaxation. Reward yourself for all of your hard work - get out there and let the wind and the waves wash away your worries.

There are only a few boats left this weekend so call now if you plan to charter. Keep in mind that the Bay Bridge will be closed, so plan your weekend accordingly.

Today's Tip
Thanks to Instructor - Dean Dietrich

When negotiating a narrow channel bounded by channel marks, it is necessary to not only keep an eye on the marks in front, but also to look at the marks astern to make sure you are still within the channel.  Otherwise, you may unknowingly be set outside of the channel by a current, causing you to run aground.

Corporate Outings!

Club Nautique hosted a Corporate Team Builder on August 6th.  The company held a business meeting in the Club house in the morning and then did a team builder on boats in the afternoon.

NOTE: Names have been withheld to protect the participants from their supervisors finding out how much fun they had!

The event was organized as a "Photo Treasure Hunt" and it was a huge success. Sailing from Alameda, we gave the two boats about a dozen subjects they could locate on a chart and photograph. Ranging in value based on difficulty, they included a number of sea buoys and large visible objects like an aircraft carrier and a light house. Bonus points were given for including a team member in the photo or picturing a seal on a buoy. The winning team garnered a total of 67 points to the other teams' 56 points.

There is still a lot of good weather ahead to get your corporate group out for a Team Builder this year. Contact Doug Perry through the Alameda base to get details on how you can get your team working more effectively.

"Club Nautique provided us with an excellent option for our monthly leadership meeting. For the first part of the day, we were able to take advantage of their meeting space to conduct our normal business discussions. Then, in the afternoon, Club Nautique set us up with an indelible team building activity. They were flexible throughout the day and provided us with everything we needed for a highly successful day!"

Name withheld.

QUESTION:
If you are traveling inside a narrow channel in the greater San Francisco Bay with the channel mark

Fl R 6s 15ft 4M "4"
Ra Ref

just ahead and to starboard, and the channel mark

Fl R 4s 14ft 4M "2"

astern and to starboard, what popular restaurant can you see off your port side?

Hint: 18649.

This week's prize: A $25 gift certificate to that restaurant.
Amplifications & Corrections

The week before last week's Noggin Boggler incorrectly stated that there were only three legal configurations of navigation lights for a sailboat underway at night. CPM student John Purl pointed out that a sailing vessel of less than 7 meters in length (23.1 ft) may also use an electric torch (flashlight) or a white lantern, to illuminate herself while underway at night. Kudos to John Purl for keeping us on our toes and in the know!

Aki Kaniel's trip through the Panama Canal

Some incredible shots sent in by instructor, Aki Kaniel documenting his passage through the Panama Canal. Thanks for sharing Aki!

We arrived at the Pedro Miguel Lock and waited our turn. We entered the left Lock and were lowered quickly without much turbulence, like a rubber ducky in an emptying tub.

15 minutes later we were in the small Miraflores Lake heading to the dual Miraflores lock. Our family and friends were watching the Webcam installed here and were excited to see our white Catamaran enter the lock and lowered toward the Pacific. The tourists in the Miraflores observation deck were also watching and waving to us.
