Sailing is such an incredible journey. From leisurely cruising to racing to practicing and honing your skills, there is always something new to discover and to share. I've noticed that when I go out with other people, particularly those with whom I have not sailed,
I learn something new. Sailors love sharing their wisdom! Whether it be a different method of tying a knot, a cool new way to stow gear or a must-have item for my sail bag, I usually pick up a gem or two and pass along one or two of my own.

Club Nautique is in the business of sharing sailing knowledge through our classes and instruction, but we also want to facilitate your learning and sharing with other sailors. Come
to our Crew Mixer in Sausalito this Saturday, August 22nd, to learn and share with other sailors. You might just sail away with some gems!

We're going to Mexico!

It's ON! We're going out the gate and turning left!

We filled the boat, but due to some late cancellations there are new opportunities to get on board. Come to our planning party to learn more during our August 22nd crew mixer in Sausalito.

Today's Tip

Anchor lights and Steaming (masthead) lights are difficult to see during the daylight hours. When doing your precruise it is helpful to walk down the dock and view them from a distance. Binoculars can also help to see the lights in the daytime. REMEMBER to shut all your lights off right after checking them to avoid running down batteries and premature bulb failures.

SEMINAR SERIES

Join us at the Oakland West Marine; you'll be glad that you did!  here will be lots of good information on a variety of sailing  topics, plus special offers to save you money.

Thursday, August 20th - DSC - Digital Selective Calling

You can recognize a VHF radio that has Digital Selective Calling (DSC) by the red DISTRESS button on its face. But there is much more to DSC than just calling for help. Through the use of digital signals DSC allows you to call privately between VHF radios, and it can even leave messages, much like an answering machine! Come to this seminar to learn all the ins and outs of this technology.

Presented by Club Nautique instructor, Thomas Jeremiason. Thomas holds a Coast Guard 100 ton license with radar, sailing and towing endorsements and holds an FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit. Thomas also captains and crews aboard many of the commercial cruise boats in the Bay Area, including Hornblower, USS Potomac and the Red and White Fleet.

FREE! Everyone welcome!

QUESTION:
Provide the name and function of the highlighted piece of hardware in the photo below.

ANSWER:
The highlighted piece of hardware is called a toggle. Its function is to provide a two-way hinge to eliminate bending stresses between the chain plate and the turnbuckle. Toggles are an essential part of a sailboat's standing rigging. They can also be found on a boat's lifeline attachments.
