Today's Tip

Shake the twist out of the end of your sheet when you cast it off the winch.

When you wrap a sheet around a winch, every turn puts 360° of twist in the line. When you cast off the sheet, if you don't shake the twist out it will work its way forward where it can cause kinks at the fairleads (jib sheets) or the blocks on the boom (mainsheet).

QUESTION:

The scope of an anchor rode is defined as the ratio of the rode-length to the vertical distance between the anchor and the bow roller. For an all-chain rode a scope of 5:1 is normally recommended. But in shallow water (less than 25') you should actually use more than 5:1, while in deep water (greater than 60') you can get away with less. Why?

ANSWER:

One of the keys to anchoring securely is to pull on the anchor in a fairly horizontal direction. This allows the anchor to dig into the bottom, while pulling vertically breaks the anchor free when it is time to go. With an all-chain anchor rode the weight of the chain makes the rode sag in a curve called a catenary, producing a more horizontal pull at the anchor than if the rode were made of a lighter material, such as nylon. Because of this, the general rule for anchoring with chain is to use a 5:1 scope, rather than the normal 7:1 scope. In deep water you can actually get away with even less scope (less than 4:1 in 100' of water depth) because the weight of the chain is so great, while in shallow water (less than 25') the chain sags less and starts to approach the straight-line pull of nylon, requiring greater than 5:1 scope for the same angle of pull.

Question:

There are numerous ways to coil a line (open coil, figure 8, over & under, etc.). The figure 8 is often preferred among experienced racers and cruisers for coiling running rigging that needs to be ready for use. Why?

Trip to the Farallones onboard Thousand Aces

Sent in by Russ Vinyard. Thank you so much for these glimpses Russ. This is some incredible stuff.

"We had read reports from the previous weekend of a gray spotted 4 miles west of the Farallones and a school of tuna but saw nothing but sea lions and seals.  Cruising south and almost despairing of seeing whales, at 1500 we noticed a spout off the southwest shore of the southern group of Islands. We approached close enough to see a humpback surface several times.  While maintaining our distance, we watched as the whale circled the Islands.  He got as close as 25 ft to the shore and surfaced as close as 30 or 40 yards from our boat, showing his tale when he dove twice.  After watching him for almost an hour, we headed back toward the bay."

Some happy whale watchers
