We feel blessed at our clubhouses. When classes return full of joyful faces after a day on the water, it infuses the place with a gleeful buoyancy. We get filled to our gunnels with pride at providing something that enriches lives. Thank you all for giving us something to be so enthusiastic about!

We are looking forward to sharing more of that enthusiasm with you at our crew mixer this Thursday. It'll be a great opportunity to meet like-minded sailors and build your buddy list. We hope to see you there!

Today's Tip

Use the angle of your anchor rode to gauge your speed while anchoring.

Managing the anchor rode is a big part of anchoring technique. The goal when paying out the rode is to lay it in a straight line on the bottom, while avoiding a pile-up on the anchor. The goal when retrieving the rode is to minimize the work that the crew or the electric windlass has to do, without overrunning the rode, and possibly fouling the keel or the propeller.

While deploying the anchor the boat should be moving very slowly backwards as the anchor touches bottom. Then, as the rode is being paid out, watch its angle from the bow. The rode should angle forward, indicating tension to keep it laying straight on the bottom. The tension also helps to hold the boat's bow into the wind.

While retrieving the anchor, the boat should be moving forward just fast enough to keep the rode vertical. This minimizes the work that the crew or the windlass has to do to bring the rode aboard. Good communication from the bow to the helm will help the driver to go the right speed.

Although you can't usually see the rode on the bottom, its angle from the bow of the boat can tell you a lot about what is happening beneath the surface. It is a valuable and easy reference when you are anchoring.

Congratulations CPM Graduates!

A hearty congratulations to our two latest CPM graduates! John Purl and Paul Koenig. They pulled off their Tag Along voyages with overnight jaunts around the Farallones. They were two very tired but elated faces back at the clubhouse.

John Purl center, barely keeping his eyes open, happily posed with School Director and General Manager, Jim Hancock. He asked that his instructor, Thomas Perry, give him those rabbit ears.

Paul was all smiles when he came in to get his log book officially signed. His permagrin remained through our photo op with School Director, Jim Hancock.

Nautical Noggin-Boggler
WINNER!

The masses were Boggled! There were no correct answers to last week's Boggler. See the correct answer below.

QUESTION:

While you can find books with hundreds of knots in them, there are only a few knots that you really need to know to be a proficient sailor. But even some of these are really just variations on a theme. In the alphabetical list of nine common knots below there are only five unique structures*. Group the knots into five groups according their structure.

Bowline
Cleat Hitch
Clove Hitch
Figure 8
Lark's Head
Reef Knot
Sail Lashing
Sheet Bend
The two half hitches on a Round Turn and Two Half Hitches

* The structure of a knot refers to the pattern in which the parts of the rope cross and pass around one another.

CORRECT ANSWER:

Group 1
-

Cleat Hitch
Clove Hitch
The Two Half-Hitches on a Round Turn and Two Half-Hitches

Notice the structural similarity of the "one bridge crossing two rivers in each of these knots"

Group 2 -

Sheet Bend
Bowline

Sheet Bend and Bowline

Group 3 -

Lark's Head
Reef Knot

Progression showing the structural similarity between the Lark's Head and the Reef Knot

Group 4 -

Figure 8

The Figure 8 is structurally unique among these nine knots

Group 5

Sail Lashing

The Sail Lashing is structurally unique among these nine knots

Nautical Noggin-Boggler

Reply to this email with your answer to the following nautical Noggin-Boggler. No need to change the title. Club Nautique will randomly select a winner from all correct responses received by end of business on Monday, July 27th.

This week's prize:
A pair of heavy duty rubber anchoring gloves!

The scope of an anchor rode is defined as the ratio of the rode-length to the vertical distance between the anchor and the bow roller. For an all-chain rode a scope of 5:1 is normally recommended. But in shallow water (less than 25') you should actually use more than 5:1, while in deep water (greater than 60') you can get away with less. Why?

Employees of Club Nautique/Cruising Yachts and members of their families not eligible for prizes.
