We hope you enjoyed Summer Sailstice and that you had a wonderful Father's Day!

It seems summer has finally arrived.
It's sublime out there! Go for a sail and take advantage of the long days and the warm breezes.

July 4th is just around the corner. Have a blast celebrating our nation's birthday. Treat yourself and your friends and family to some fireworks on a sailboat!

Today's Tip

Kaboom 2009, Photo by Deb Fehr

Think twice before you anchor to watch fireworks.

Fireworks are great fun to watch from the water, but the dense crowds of boats that they draw together in the dark creates a risk of collisions. An anchored boat is a sitting duck for an inattentive skipper or a boat that is dragging its anchor. On the other hand, a boat underway needs to keep a proper lookout amid lots of distractions.

Club Nautique generally recommends against anchoring for fireworks. If you follow this recommendation be sure that you have more than one competent driver onboard so that you can take turns at the helm and let everyone get a chance to enjoy the show. Keep the crash, boom, bang in the sky! Stay alert as drivers around you may be looking up instead of at where they are going.

If you choose to anchor, note the tides to see if there will be a shift during the show and make sure that you have room to swing. It's best if you set your anchor before sunset so you can see any potential hazards. Monitor your boat for dragging and be alert to other boats dragging anchor or snagging your rode.

So to anchor or not to anchor is up to you. Just stay safe and have fun!

QUESTION:
The summer solstice occurs on June 20 at 2246, Local Time. At the instant of the solstice the sun will have reached the northern-most point of its travel from the equator, and will start its journey southward again with the days getting shorter until December 21, when the cycle starts over.

Astronomers, astrologers and cartographers put special significance on four parallels of latitude that relate to the summer and winter solstices. What are the names and latitudes of those parallels and how do they relate to the solstices?

ANSWER:

Arctic Circle (66.5° N):
Southern most latitude where sun is visible 24h at summer solstice.
Tropic of Cancer (23.5° N):
Latitude where sun reaches zenith on summer solstice.
Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° S):
Latitude where sun reaches zenith on winter solstice.
Antarctic Circle  (66.5° S):
Northern most latitude where sun is visible 24h at winter solstice
