Today's Tip
Clipper Cove

Clipper Cove is one of the best all-round anchorages in the Bay. It's also the nerve center for Saturday's Summer Sailstice activities; so now is a good time to learn how to navigate in and around this former seaplane harbor.

Named for the romantic Pan American Clipper seaplanes, Clipper Cove is situated between Yerba Buena Island and the man-made Treasure Island. It has good holding in most places but is foul in others. The most important thing to be aware of is the shoal that blocks most of the entrance from the south end.

  • Upon entering Clipper Cove stay to the right hand side and run parallel along the waterfront.
  • Not a bad idea to set up a trip line with your anchor in case it gets snagged on any debris.
  • Watch tides and plan to arrive and depart with at least 1 to 2 feet above datum.

The Coast Guard has posted a local notice to mariners for the area around the bay bridge construction:

Mariners are advised to avoid the construction area by using the main navigational channel west of YBI or the alternate channel, piers I-J, east of the construction site. Mariners transiting the area should proceed with caution to avoid creating unstable conditions for on-site workers. The green center span lights have been temporarily extinguished in the three spans east of the main channel span. Barges are anchored in the area, anchor lines extend approximately 1500 ft north and south of the barges, anchor buoys are lighted at night with quick flashing white lights. Anchor lines extend approximately 800 ft north and south of the barges, anchor buoys are lighted at night with quick flashing white lights. Barges are lighted at night with steady burning red lights.

Last week's Noggin-Boggler:

QUESTION:
You are sailing with the jib fully unfurled. It is time to head back to the dock. When you go to furl the jib in, you find that the furler has jammed beyond repair. What should be your next course of action?

ANSWER:
Head in to the wind and drop the jib onto the deck by lowering the jib halyard. Secure or stow the jib. If you're on a Club Nautique boat, let us know about your difficulty on the post cruise form.

Nautical Noggin-Boggler:

The summer solstice occurs on June 20 at 2246, Local Time. At the instant of the solstice the sun will have reached the northern-most point of its travel from the equator, and will start its journey southward again with the days getting shorter until December 21, when the cycle starts over.

Astronomers, astrologers and cartographers put special significance on four parallels of latitude that relate to the summer and winter solstices. What are the names and latitudes of those parallels and how do they relate to the solstices?

Employees of Club Nautique/Cruising Yachts and members of their families not eligible for prizes.
