June sailing planner:
This weekend, go sailing!
Saturday, June 20th is the Summer Sailstice, when the sailing community gathers together to celebrate sailing and the longest day of the year. Charter a boat and join in the fun! If you want to volunteer to help out at the event, contact Marianne.
Sunday, June 21st is Father's day. What better way to show Dad you care than to take him out for a sail!

Today's Tip
|
|
In-Mast Furling - Don't Force It!
1. Be sure to set the clutch on the mast to "FREE" while sailing.
2. Never force a furling mechanism. If you need to use a winch, it should be easy to crank.

Nautical Noggin-Boggler - WINNER!
|
|
We selected our winner randomly from the correct answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize!
Congratulations to last week's winner: Lester Hardy!

Last week's Noggin-Boggler:
You
are traveling at 6 knots with steady speed and heading. You sight the
Alcatraz light bearing 45° off your starboard bow. Ten minutes later
the light is directly off your starboard beam. How far away is the
light?
Answer: 1 nm speed x time = distance run e.g. 6 kts x 10 min (6x10/60) = 1 nm (since distance run = distance off, the light is 1 nm away) The traditional method is called bow and beam bearing. It is based on the geometric fact that two sides of a 45° right triangle are equal.
When some feature at or near the shoreline is 45° off the bow, you begin keeping track of your distance through the water, either by log or by time and speed.
Note that the bearing is relative, so the bearing compass reading will be 45° less or more than the steering compass reading, depending on whether the shoreside feature is to port or starboard. When the shoreside feature is abeam-bearing 90° relative to your heading, the distance you have run is equal to the distance off.

Tip: (Thanks to Gary Scheier) Place a piece of blue tape on the lifelines at 45 degrees relative to the helm. This works better than doing math while seasick.
