We hope you had a fantastic Memorial Day Weekend!

In appreciation of the men and women who serve our country every day, we're hosting an Armed Forces Cup this Wednesday. All five branches of the military will be competing on our Colgate 26s. Which branch will win bragging rights and take home the beautiful trophy?!

Summer Sailstice is right around the corner! Have you chartered your boat to join in the party on Treasure Island?
Today's
Tip

Telltales

The American Armed Forces Cup will pit the sailing skills of our five services against one another. To sail fast, our men and women in uniform will need to keep their sails in trim at all times!

A good measure of sail trim is the telltales. Telltales indicate how the air is flowing over the sails. When sailing on a beam reach or above, the airflow over the sails should be smooth and all of your telltales should be streaming back, with with the windward telltale on the jib angled up slightly.

On the jib, if the telltales aren't flying on one side of the sail then you need more airflow on that side. You can accomplish this by steering the boat or by adjusting the sheet to get more wind on that side of the sail.

On the mainsail, if the leech telltales are flipping to the backside it means that that the sail is over-trimmed and stalled. The mainsheet needs to be eased or you need to head up.

When sailing below a beam reach the boat is in push mode, the airflow over the sails is turbulent and the telltales are no longer useful for sail trim.

Last week's Noggin-Boggler:

While in or near an area of restricted visibility, what are the proper sound signals? Under sail? Under power?

The answer:
Rule # 35
Restricted Visibility

While underway these signals should be given at intervals of not more than 2 minutes.

Under Power: ONE PROLONGED BLAST

Under Sail: ONE PROLONGED, and TWO SHORT BLASTS

Prolonged blasts are 4 to 6 seconds. Short blasts are one second.
