 Communicate with your crew!
Before you do any maneuvers that require crew participation, be sure to communicate your expectations with each crew member. Use individual names for clarity. Even if they are competent crew, as a rule, people aren't mind readers.
For example: when pulling into the slip, don't assume that the person handling your bow line knows that you prefer they not pull in your bow or try to stop the boat. Use the name of the person you are directing and the action you want them to carry out: "Mary, when we pull into the slip, I want you to safely step off the boat and walk my bow line forward until I have stopped the boat and ask you to cleat off the line."
Communication sets expectations and helps makes things run more smoothly.

Ballena Bay YC Spring Sunset Series
(aka Beer Can Races)
Join us on Friday evenings, beginning April 3rd, for fun, competitive sailing onboard a Colgate 26 as we take part in the Ballena Bay YC beer can races. Afterwards adjourn to the yacht club bar to re-live each exciting minute and critique yourselves (and the other racers!) in a blow-by-blow race analysis from our onboard Club Nautique Tactician-du-jour . . .
Meet at CN Alameda at 5 pm (SHARP!) to prep the boat, review sailing instructions and conditions, then get out to the start line for the race.
No prior race experience required. Must be Basic Cruising certified.
Reservations required.
