Dividing plants / transplanting volunteer seedlings Each week during the spring we see the evidence of new life popping up all over the gardens. As the soil and air temperatures rise, seeds germinate and new plants begin to grow. Unfortunately, many of these new plants are ones we consider weeds.
The plants I am writing about today, though, are perennials. If you create an environment that is conducive to growth and allow plants to go to seeds you will be rewarded with many new plants. Gardeners refer to these plants as "volunteers".
In Granny's Gardens we harvest these volunteers. Some are transplanted into other areas of the gardens and some are potted up and sold at our surplus perennial sale the end of June. Each week something new is ready for harvesting. Last week it was the Verbena bonariensi, this week it is Columbine, Rose Campion and Bluebeard shrubs.
If you are dividing hostas and have more than you want, we are seeking to add more to our collection. Maybe we can trade.
You are welcome to join us in the gardens Monday - Thursday (6:30-8:30 p.m.) and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Like all gardeners, we are generous with our plants to those who lend a helping hand.
Respond to this e-mail if you want to join us. |
