Greetings Golden Gaels Fan
Hal McCarney

The Gaels moved up to #5 in the country this week after their victory over Guelph and host the 1-1 Laurier Golden Hawks tomorrow at Richardson.

Over 150 football alumni and family will be attending the game as we celebrate Legacy Weekend 2008.

Lots of great information below including:

  • Updated Top 27 by Duane Rollins
  • New QFC Weekly Newsletter Home Page
  • New Gael Force Fan Club on Facebook
  • Pregame tailgate party next when the Gaels come to Varsity
  • Journal Editorial on the Gaels name

Finally, we want to let people know that Hal McCarney is doing extremely well and the doctors seem to be almost shocked at his progress. The family is very much looking forward to having him home and are hopeful that he will be released from the Intensive Care Unit in the next day or two.

Queen's offence, return game concern Laurier

By CLINT WALPER
WHIG-STANDARD SPORTS REPORTER

Players from the Queen's Gaels and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks will be far from friendly when they take the field for tomorrow's football game at Richardson Stadium, but the coaches readily agree upon one thing.

"We have our toughest challenge of the season thus far," said Gaels coach Pat Sheahan.

"Laurier is going to bring a much more balanced offence in and will be tougher on defence, plus they're good on special teams. There's still anumberof play-e rs from the Vanier Cup-winning team in 2005 in their nucleus and they've been a good team ever since then."

Laurier coach Gary Jeffries echoed the sentiment.

Queen's Athletics teams have dropped their 'golden' designation and become simply the Queen's Gaels, Athletics and Recreation Director Leslie Dal Cin said in a Journal interview Sept. 5. Athletics teams have been known as the 'Golden Gaels' since 1947.

Dal Cin said the department is rebranding and looking into an official name change with Canadian Interuniversity Sport and Ontario University Athletics, the programs Queen's competes under. For now, the name change appears in marketing initiatives and on the athletes' new gold uniforms.

Gaels haven't beaten Laurier since October 11, 2003

By Andrew Bucholtz, Sports Editor

On the heels of their 41-30 triumph over the Guelph Gryphons last week, the men's football team will face the Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday at 1 p.m. at Richardson Stadium. Laurier edged out a 15-13 victory over Guelph in their first game two weeks ago, but fell 31-20 to the Western Mustangs last week.

Queen's quarterback Dan Brannagan, who currently leads all CIS players with 725 passing yards, said the Golden Hawks won't be easy opponents.
