In celebration of the 125th year of Queen's Football
last year we held a special weekend to mark the event
and it proved to be a great time for all alumni, fans and
families.
We have decided to continue this weekend tradition with a Fall Reunion for all Gael alumni, parents, fans and boosters. This year it is scheduled for Sept 12/13 when the Gaels host the Laurier Golden Hawks. This year we have the special opportunity to celebrate four championship teams from the past - the 45th anniversary of the 1963 Yates Cup team, the 40th anniversary of the 1968 team, the 30th anniversary of the 1978 team and the 25th anniversary of the 1983 team. The weekend activities will include the
following:
- Friday afternoon golf tournament - Pre game tailgate and VIP area for the game - post game reception with the players Prior to the game against the Laurier Golden Hawks we will be holding a tailgate VIP party for the whole family in the Gaels Club. The BBQ grill will be fired up with hot dogs, hamburgers and licensed refreshments. The Gaels Club will be open throughout the game featuring Flat Screen TVs showing the game and is a great place to catch up with old friends and let the kids run around in the Kids Play area with assorted bouncy castles, etc. |

NOTE TO FANS OF THE QUEEN'S Gaels: Celebrate yesterday's season-starting blowout of the visiting McMaster Marauders but know, too, that these tricolour footballers have, in the words of their coach Pat Sheahan, "a lot of work to do." Though there were plenty of positives to take from the 35-11 Labour Day victory before a sun-kissed turnout of 6,504 at Richardson Stadium, the game was anything but a display of textbook football. "In Week 1 you generally blow a tire," Sheahan explained following a game lowlighted by a total of 23 infractions, including nine by his squad. "There were a lot of penalties." He said the Gaels wasted early opportunities but -and this doesn't always happen -got away with it. |

The Hamilton Spectator Rock group Queen's song lyric pounded out over the public address system, summing up the outcome -- 'We will, we will rock you.' That's exactly what Queen's Golden Gaels did to McMaster Marauders during their Ontario University Athletics football season opener yesterday. Playing before a crowd of 6,504 at Richardson Stadium, Gaels built a big lead and coasted to a convincing 35-11 victory. The score was 28-0 entering the fourth quarter. "They beat us fairly soundly," said Mac head coach Stefan Ptaszek. "This is our starting point. We'll see where we can get to. We played a good football team. If we clean up a couple of things we can compete." |

U of T Blues end 0-49 streak
Grown men cried and fans rushed the field as the U of T's Varsity Blues ended a 49-game losing streak in Ontario university football action last night with a late touchdown and a last-minute field goal. The 18-17 win at Varsity Centre against the Waterloo Warriors sent fans leaping into the air as they celebrated a victory after seven long years of waiting. "I told you, I told you today was the day," screamed former player Simon Clarke-Okah as he and thousands of fans bounded onto the field to celebrate. |

Monday's season-opening 35-11 win over McMaster
didn't turn up any glaringly obvious red flags. Dan
Brannagan throwing for close to 300 yards? Check.
One-hundred-yard games for Mike Giffin (143 yards
rushing) and Scott Valberg (a buck thirty-two
receiving)? Check Defence pitching a shutout for three
quarters? Check.
All of that is nice, for a moment. The Guelph Gryphons,
meantime, shot themselves in the foot big time in their
15-13 loss to Laurier, which means if they're worth a
damn, they'll play with an edge when on Saturday for
the University Rush season premiere on The Score.

Six letters can mean so much. As part of their big re-
branding, Queen's sports press releases this week
have referred to varsity teams as the "Queen's Gaels,"
not the Golden Gaels moniker that's been in use for
decades.
Athletic director Leslie Dal Cin and her staff, who frankly, know a lot more about the business and marketing side than I ever hope to, apparently would like to play up the Queen's name - as in Queen's Football, Queen's Soccer, and the like - and downplay Golden Gaels. This isn't happening in a vacuum, since other universities want some clarity with what their teams are called in the media. |
