The No. 9 Queen's Golden Gaels will try and rebound from their first loss of the season when they tangle with the No. 2 ranked Ottawa Gee Gees this weekend in the nation's capital.

The Ottawa Gee Gees, the defending Yates Cup champions, are a perfect 5-0 rolling over McMaster 60-7 last week. In that game, Ottawa ended with 600 yards offensively and led the game 38-0 at halftime.

It will be strength against strength on Saturday as the Gaels and the nation's third leading rusher Mike Giffin, (Kingston , Ont.) face the second leading defence against the run in the CIS. Giffin gained 165 yards on 25 carries Saturday against Laurier to give him 671 on the campaign and his nine touchdowns lead the country.

The Ottawa defence is second in the CIS conceding just 84 yards rushing a game this season. After giving up 136 yards to Guelph's Nick FitzGibbon Puslinch, Ontario in week one the Gee Gee defence has conceded a total of just 278 yards total along the ground.

For the Queen's defence they come into week six having held each of their previous opponents to below their seasonal offensive averages. In Ottawa the Gaels will face the No. 2 passing offence in the country led by quarterback Joshua Sacobie Fredericton, New Brunswick, who has thrown for a CIS leading 1556 yards. He has also thrown for a Canadian high 14 touchdowns and his 64.2% completion percentage is among the nation's leaders.

The game will kickoff at 2pm this Saturday October 6th at Frank Clair Stadium on Bank Street in Ottawa. Listen to the game on CFRC 101.9 FM for the live broadcast or on the web at www.cfrc.ca

It seems the Golden Gaels are fallible after all.

The football team's undefeated run came to a halt Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium, when the Laurier Golden Hawks beat them 23-4.

The battle of two undefeated teams was witnessed by 5,582 fans.

Queen's leads Ottawa 22-4 in the third quarter Oct. 6, 1986, at Richardson Stadium when Andy McEvoy comes off the bench to replace starting Gee-Gees quarterback Cam Baird. McEvoy engineers two touchdown drives and is within sight of scoring the go- ahead TD when the Gee-Gees fumble at the Queen's 15-yard line with less than three minutes to play. Matt Clifford of the Gaels recovers and Queen's hangs on for a 23-17 win.

Three weeks ago, the Ottawa Gee-Gees almost lost a football game they should have easily won at Western. The experience refocused them so sharply they dropped 60 points on McMaster last weekend.

As they prepare to travel to Ottawa for an Ontario University Athletics game tomorrow, the Queen's Golden Gaels are hoping a similarly sad-sack offensive performance against Laurier last week will provide them with the same kind of Road to Damascus experience. "It's really put us back in perspective," Gaels guard Vince DeCivita said of the 23-4 setback against Laurier, Queen's first loss of the year.

"We were kind of, I don't want to say overconfident, but we made mental mistakes during the week [in practice] because of the emotional win [at Windsor] and maybe we were a little too confident."

In the past few years, College Colours has published a very entertaining Top 27 which looks to rank all football programs across the country on a weekly basis. We included the poll last year in our newsletter and will continue to do so this year

Please click here to see the poll.

This year, for the first time, the hard core and well informed fans of www.cisfootball.org have published their first initial poll. This weeks poll was conducted by over 30 members with wide representation from across the country.

Ottawa city council would have a sure-fire way to recoup some of its costs if it decides to tear down and rebuild all or part of Frank Clair Stadium: Let some football-loving Queen's grads man the wrecking ball, and charge them for the privilege.

Leaving aside the contentious political debate, tearing Frank Clair down or making radical change* might help the Gaels win in Ottawa for a change. It's all about us, you know. Meantime, the south side stands being closed means the teams don't have use of the regular dressing rooms, which probably adds to the Gee-Gees' home field advantage.
