Hamilton Spectator
Larry Moko
The Hamilton Spectator Quarterback Adam Archibald of the McMaster Marauders has something to prove. To himself. To football fans in Kingston. To his teammates. Today, for the first time in his five-year Ontario
University Athletics career, Archibald will call
signals in his hometown of Kingston against
the Queen's Golden Gaels.
Gaels are 2-0, while Marauders take a 1-1 record into Richardson Stadium for the 1:25 p.m. start. "I played four Kingston area high school football championship games on that field," Archibald said after a recent practice at Alumni Field. "They were fun. "But I've never taken a single snap in
university there. In my first year at Mac, when
we travelled to Kingston, it was the only game I
didn't play."
The 6-foot-5 former league all-star says Mac
still has a bitter taste in its mouth from last
year's loss to Queen's in the opening round of
playoffs. The visiting Gaels (4-4) had finished
sixth while Marauders (6-2) were third.
A controversial fake field goal in the fourth quarter helped fuel the Queen's comeback from a 17-6 halftime disadvantage. "I took it pretty personal after that game ... with my performance," Archibald said. |

By most accounts, the McMaster Marauders were destined this year to be as successful as Adam Archibald could make them. Based on the first two games of the Ontario
University Athletics football season it appears
the Marauders may do just fine. Archibald, the
fifth-year quarterback from Kingston, leads the
country with a completion percentage of .682,
650 yards passing and five touchdowns.
Archibald has led McMaster to a 1-1 record
and a No. 9 ranking.
"As much as we lost 16 starters, we're not in a rebuilding year because Adam Archibald has the potential to be the best quarterback in the nation," said Marauders coach Stefan Ptaszek. "We can go as far as he can take us. To date he has not disappointed. In 67 throws, he's made one bad decision." Today, Archibald will play his first game in Kingston since he left Frontenac Secondary School. He didn't play when the Marauders visited Richardson Stadium in his freshman year and they haven't been back since. What fans will see today, Ptaszek said, will be a genuine leader. |

On the surface, it appears to be the most curious thing. The offensive line of the McMaster Marauders is young. "Very, very young," says coach Stefan Ptasek. It is so young that McMaster, perennially known as a dangerous running football team, has managed to rush for just 149 yards in two games. On the other hand, despite their inexperience,
the Marauder linemen have protected
quarterback Adam Archibald well enough for
him to be the nation's leading passer going
into tomorrow afternoon's game with the
Queen's Golden Gaels.
The apparent incongruity isn't a mystery to Queen's coach Pat Sheahan. "You put a guy in the [shotgun formation] and then spread people out, you can't get to him as fast, even if you are committed to blitz football," Sheahan said yesterday. |

Defence shines in 26-14 football win over
Guelph Gryphons
By Mike Woods, Sports Editor, Queen's Journal The men's football team overcame a slow start
to defeat the Guelph Gryphons 26-14 in their
rain-soaked home opener on Sunday.
Gaels quarterback Danny Brannagan went 15- 32 for 261 yards and two touchdowns while receiver Rob Bagg caught eight passes for 96 yards and one touchdown. It was the second week in a row that saw the Gaels come from behind in the second half to win. Queen's head coach Pat Sheahan said although he was happy with the win, his team's slow starts have become worrisome. |
