Greetings to all Golden Gael football fans in
Canada and around the world. I am pleased
to know that so many of you are following the
team's progress this year from near and far.
The coaches and I will post emails on the
team bulletin board in the locker room if you
continue to send them.
We're off to a good start at 2-0 and a pre-
season victory over McGill in our non-
conference exhibition game. The boys have
worked hard and the coaches have done a
great job preparing them to play. To date the
defense and special teams have performed
well and the offense has had its moments
after a series of slow starts. We are winning
the turnover battles and staying away from
critical errors at key times. We have been
less penalized than our opponents in all
three games. That said, there remain things
to work on.
This week's opponent is McMaster
University, a solid team with some big play
guys. Adam Archibald is a fifth year QB from
right here in Kingston. Adam is a big guy
(6'5/230) with a strong arm. He has passed
well in his previous two starts. He will be
looking "to light it up"
in what could be his final game at
Richardson Stadium. His main targets are
slot backs Mike Bradwell (#21), Jordan
Charters (#83) and Rob Serviss (#84). Mac
uses lots of motion and multiple sets running
their offense. Defensive Coordinator Pat
Tracey is primed to lock horns with Mac's
Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach
Stefan Ptaszek.
The Mac defense is athletic and very
physical.
Fourth year linebackers Jason Aragki (#44)
and Simon Binder (#39) are the defensive
leaders.
Defensive tackle Chris Van Zeyl (#55) is
back for his fifth season after spending some
time at training camp with the Montreal
Alouettes. With Van Zeyl at 6'6"/275 and line
mate Justin Glover
(#99) 6'2"/300 lbs the Marauders will
challenge the Queen's O-line for the line of
scrimmage this week. The Mac secondary is
athletic but not as experienced as it has
been in past years. Veteran Linebacker
Eugene Boakye has been injured of late but
we shouldn't be surprised to see him back in
action for this important game. Boakye was
selected by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in
this past year's CFL draft. His name is on
the roster but it is unknown what his status is
for the weekend.
The Marauder backfield has been very strong for a number of years producing a string of great CIS runners. There are two good young ball carriers in the Mac line up again this year. Jermaine DeCosta and Joey Nemet appear to be the heirs to Jesse Lumsden and Andre Sadeghian, both of whom are currently playing in the CFL. Should be great game this Saturday! Hope to see you there. Regards Coach Sheahan |

On the surface, it appears to be the most curious thing. The offensive line of the McMaster Marauders is young. "Very, very young," says coach Stefan Ptasek. It is so young that McMaster, perennially known as a dangerous running football team, has managed to rush for just 149 yards in two games. On the other hand, despite their inexperience,
the Marauder linemen have protected
quarterback Adam Archibald well enough for
him to be the nation's leading passer going
into tomorrow afternoon's game with the
Queen's Golden Gaels.
The apparent incongruity isn't a mystery to Queen's coach Pat Sheahan. "You put a guy in the [shotgun formation] and then spread people out, you can't get to him as fast, even if you are committed to blitz football," Sheahan said yesterday. |

Defence shines in 26-14 football win over
Guelph Gryphons
By Mike Woods, Sports Editor, Queen's Journal The men's football team overcame a slow start
to defeat the Guelph Gryphons 26-14 in their
rain-soaked home opener on Sunday.
Gaels quarterback Danny Brannagan went 15- 32 for 261 yards and two touchdowns while receiver Rob Bagg caught eight passes for 96 yards and one touchdown. It was the second week in a row that saw the Gaels come from behind in the second half to win. Queen's head coach Pat Sheahan said although he was happy with the win, his team's slow starts have become worrisome. |
