Sports - Monday, September 10, 2007 It might be exciting for fans and euphoric for players, but the pattern the Queen's Golden Gaels have established early this year for winning football games is not endearing for coach Pat Sheahan. "That won't be a formula for success, waiting until midway through the third quarter to come alive," Sheahan said yesterday, after his team did just that in a 26-14 Ontario University Athletics victory over the visiting Guelph Gryphons. A crowd of 4,622 braved chilly, sometimes
rainy conditions to watch the Gaels improve
their early-season record to 2-0.
"We're going to have to make more plays in
the first half because those big explosion
plays late in the second half are not always
going to be there."

GREG LAYSON MERCURY STAFF KINGSTON Guelph Gryphons' head coach Kyle Walters
never takes a hit during OUA football games,
but even he sounded like a beaten man after
his team's latest defeat.
Guelph (0-2) lost 26-14 to the Queen's Golden Gaels (2-0) yesterday before 4,622 fans at Richardson Stadium in Kingston. "Very demoralizing," Walters said in a phone interview after the game. "It was just . . . everything." |

The 2nd annual QFC Legacy of Excellence
Golf Tournament August 14th provided
another example of the fantastic
commitment that former and present Golden
Gaels have for the football program. The
tournament raised $201,000 for the Queen's
football team to provide additional financial
support and services essential to the running
of the team. The tournament was held at
Angus Glen North, the same golf course that
held the Canadian Open PGA event July 26-
29 won by Jim Furyk.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of
Queen's football. A lot about the sport and
the team has changed down through the
years, but one thing has remained constant:
the Tricolour's commitment to a proud,
winning tradition.
By Merv Daub, COM' 66 08/21/2007 Football at Queen's has one of the richest, and certainly one of the longest continuous histories of any sport in Canada. The Golden Gaels and their alumni have been a presence in Canadian football at both the amateur and the professional level since the first game was played at the old Cricket Field in front of the County Court House in Kingston on October 11, 1882, between the then "Tricolour of Queen's" and the Royal Military College of Canada. During the 125 years and 117 seasons since
(the difference being explained by the years
of the two World Wars, when all sanctioned
competition was cancelled), more than 3,000
young men have worn the Queen's uniform
in actual game conditions - thousands of
others have been associated with them as
non-playing members of the teams,
coaches, doctors and trainers, band
members, radio announcers, and heaven
knows what else - while literally hundreds of
thousands have attended the games or
listened via radio or television. From Day
One, football has been part of the fabric of
the University and its community.

As many of you may know, Queen's has just
published a review of the Athletics
program.
The recommendations propose significant change in a number of areas, including funding, fees and the number of inter- university athletic teams Queen's should support. I encourage all those interested in Queen's
athletics to review the report as there are
significant and positive changes
recommended.
The full report with recommendations and associated documents can be found below. If you would like to provide feedback, the Principal invites you to write to her at khitchcock@post.queensu.ca by November 16th, 2007. She expects to be in a position to make final decisions on the recommendations by December 31, 2007. |
