Greetings Golden Gaels Fan
Gaels At Western

Over the 125 years of Queen's Golden Gaels football there must have been many instances of listening to the Gaels on CFRC radio through crackling static and intermittent reception desperately hoping that the signal stays strong through the end of the game.

The high tech 2007 version of this story occurred last night as many fans were trying to log on to CFRC's broadcast of the Gaels dramatic come from behind victory against Western. All of the server streams from both CFRC and the Western radio station were full and unable to take on more listeners late into the evening.

Eventually, a stream came open and I was able to huddle close to the speaker at low volume - hoping not to wake up our young daughters - and listen as the Gaels started the season in style!!

As we head into the 2007 season and the 125 year of Queen's Football there is a lot of great things happening. We will be using this newsletter during the season to keep people up to date on all the latest.

The next big event on the calendar is the 125 year Celebration weekend on Sept. 28/29th. We have had some great response to the weekend but need everyone who is coming to register in the next two weeks so that we can confirm numbers. I encourage everyone to attend.

This is a special year for Queen's football as it will be 125 years since the Gaels first started playing football in 1882.

To mark this celebration Queen's University and the Queen's Football Club will celebrate the occasion in Kingston on Sept. 28th and 29th.

All players, alumni, fans, parents and boosters are invited to both events. The details and registration of the weekend are noted below.

Please register in the next two weeks as we need to confirm numbers.

The weekend itinerary will include the following activities:

Friday afternoon golf at Smuggler's Glen
Family Tailgate/VIP seating at Richardson Stadium
Saturday evening Buffet Party at The Grizzly Grill

Golf: Smuggler's Glen was nominated for the Best New Golf Course in 2006 by Golf Digest and is located in the heart of the 1000 islands near Gananoque. It will be a beautiful setting for our return to the Kingston area for an annual golf event. The event will include lunch and dinner and a golfer gift.

Tailgate: Prior to the game against the Laurier Golden Hawks we will be holding a tailgate VIP party for the whole family. The BBQ grill will be fired up with hot dogs, hamburgers and refreshments.

Dinner: Saturday evening we will hold a dinner party at the Grizzly Grill in Kingston for alumni, fans, boosters, parents and players. All are invited as the festivities will kick off around 6pm.

A stunning comeback, capped by a 23-yard touchdown run by Mike Giffin in overtime, gave the Queen's Golden Gaels a 26-20 win over the Western Mustangs in the opening game of the Ontario University Athletics football season last night.

A sell-out crowd of 9,413 watched the No. 7- ranked Mustangs squander a 20-6 third- quarter lead as the Gaels won for the fourth time in their last five games, dating to last season.

"That was a helluva one to be a part of," said Queen's linebacker D.J. Mullholland, whose block of a Derek Schiavone field goal attempt with no time on the clock sent the game into overtime.

Western blows a late two-touchdown lead as rival Queen's spoiled Greg Marshall's debut.

By MORRIS DALLA COSTA, SUN MEDIA

Most people expected the new era of football at Western to be exciting.

That's exactly what they got in the opening game.

But most would have preferred a different ending to what was supposed to be a fairy tale return of Greg Marshall as coach of the Mustangs.

The Marshall era began with his Mustangs blowing a big lead and losing 26-20 to the Queen's Golden Gaels in overtime in the Ontario university football season opener last night at TD Waterhouse Stadium.

Shocked. Stunned. Disbelieving. All of the above. That's what most of the 9,413 in the stands and the Mustangs players were after the Gaels' improbable comeback.

The next edition will includes the season previews from the Whig Standard and other media sources, a recap of the Angus Glen fundraiser and a whole host of other stories - stay tuned!

Please forward this email on to others who would be interested in receiving this newsletter.

In addition, please provide us any and all feedback.
