Sports - Tuesday, September 04, 2007 A stunning comeback, capped by a 23-yard touchdown run by Mike Giffin in overtime, gave the Queen's Golden Gaels a 26-20 win over the Western Mustangs in the opening game of the Ontario University Athletics football season last night. A sell-out crowd of 9,413 watched the No. 7-
ranked Mustangs squander a 20-6 third-
quarter lead as the Gaels won for the fourth
time in their last five games, dating to last
season.
"That was a helluva one to be a part of," said
Queen's linebacker D.J. Mullholland, whose
block of a Derek Schiavone field goal attempt
with no time on the clock sent the game into
overtime.

Western blows a late two-touchdown lead as
rival Queen's spoiled Greg Marshall's
debut.
By MORRIS DALLA COSTA, SUN MEDIA Most people expected the new era of football
at Western to be exciting.
That's exactly what they got in the opening game. But most would have preferred a different ending to what was supposed to be a fairy tale return of Greg Marshall as coach of the Mustangs. The Marshall era began with his Mustangs blowing a big lead and losing 26-20 to the Queen's Golden Gaels in overtime in the Ontario university football season opener last night at TD Waterhouse Stadium. Shocked. Stunned. Disbelieving. All of the above. That's what most of the 9,413 in the stands and the Mustangs players were after the Gaels' improbable comeback. |
