Greetings!

It's hard to believe 30 years has passed since our Founding Mothers opened the doors to what would become Laurel House.

By opening those doors, countless women, children, and families now have a new life after domestic violence.

We're still opening our doors, every day and every night, welcoming people into our shelter for 30 days (sometimes more).  It's because of you that we have been able to do so for 30 years.

Our official birthday isn't until this spring, but there's so much to celebrate that we needed to get started a little early.  Here's how.

Today we launch 30 Days ... 30 Years, a celebration of all the wonderful stories, volunteer efforts, and generosity that has happened in the past 30 days, and those happening in the 30 days to come.

It's a celebration of the changes seen in the past 30 years.  And dedicating ourselves to all that is to come in the next 30 years.

We're asking you to be part of this special year with us: by attending or organizing a special event, coordinating a cell phone and ink cartridge collection drive, making a monetary donation, volunteering, sharing a story from the past 30 years about how Laurel House has made a difference in your life.

We're dedicating this entire year to you as we remember, recognize, and reflect on all that has made Laurel House a source of hope for 1,500 people each year and a respected leader in the fight to end domestic violence in every life, home, and community. Each month, on the 30th day, we'll bring you stories of hope from survivors, of people in the community who care, and the many ways that you're helping Laurel House make a difference.

We celebrate you, your support for the past 30 years, and your generosity will help us move forward towards a brighter future for all.

Thank you,

Beth
 Beth E. Sturman
Executive Director, Laurel House
Thank You!

During the past 30 days, many individuals, businesses and civic groups organized special projects and provided much needed donations to help the families and programs of Laurel House.
We are very grateful for your support!

colored pencils  Catalyst 360 employees organized a school supply drive to help the kids at Laurel House head back to school with all the school supplies they needed.  (Check out the story "Making a Difference, One Pencil at a Time" on our blog!)

For the third year in a row, Harriton High School senior Michael Karasick  organized a school supply collection drive to benefit Laurel House.  Michael's efforts attracted the attention of Firstrust Bank, as well as the Lower Merion library branch.  Both organizations supported his Laurel House project by offering collection boxes at their sites.  We're grateful for Michael's dedication to this project - and his commitment to its continuation.  (Michael's already recruited his replacements for next summer's school supply drive, for when he'll be away at college!)

DASH   United Storage of Montgomeryville hosted a flea market on their premises to benefit Laurel House.   We're appreciative to United Storage for donating the table fees to Laurel House, as well as for their support of the event.

Finally, the response to our food drive was amazing and overwhelming!  Thank you so very much to everyone - individuals, groups, and companies - who answered our call for help.   We greatly appreciate that so many people recognized this need and cared so deeply.

Thank you all for your support!

Tell Us Your
Laurel House Story

As part of our 30th anniversary, we're hoping to create a commemorative book of Laurel House's past three decades ... and we'd love to hear from you.

Were you involved with getting the shelter ready for its first family?  Did you help with a project in one of our transitional housing apartments in Norristown or North Wales?

Was there someone special in our shelter who helped you, a staff member or volunteer who talked with you on our hotline, gave you directions to our shelter, accompanied you to court, consoled you all night until dawn?

Are you a former Laurel House or Nehemiah's Way board member, an intern, or volunteer?  Were you on a committee helping with the first Gala or walk-a-thon?    Do you have photos or clippings to share?

Email your story of hope, your tribute to someone special, and your memories of Laurel House and Nehemiah's Way to Melissa at mfirman@laurel-house.org  to be considered for our commemorative 30th anniversary book.

Tell us your story. We're looking forward to hearing from you.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: OCTOBER 10

Laurel House, in partnership with Lankenau Hospital and Main Line Health, announces its upcoming workshop

"Addressing Domestic Violence in the Health Care Setting"

Friday, October 16, 2009
Sign in and breakfast 8:30 a.m.
Workshop 9 a.m. -3:30 p.m.

Lankenau Hospital
100 Lancaster Avenue
Wynnewood, PA 19096
Annenberg Conference Center

Who Should Attend:
This program is open to all health care, human service and law enforcement personnel who have direct contact with domestic violence and sexual assault victims within the
 State of Pennsylvania.

Why:
Health care providers are often the first people outside the home to see the injuries caused by domestic violence.

Because more than half of all victims are sexually assaulted, we will address the new minimal forensic examination when rape is disclosed.

This information-packed workshop will provide tools to appropriately assess a domestic violence situation in only two minutes.

By the end of the session participants will:
 - Have a better understanding of the dynamics of victims and abusers
- Be better able to identify victims in a health care setting
- Learn thorough and rapid assessment techniques
- Guideline for evaluation of sexual assault; referrals for children
- Be given resource and referral information

Cost: $50

Click here to access the Online Registration form. (Registration will not be accepted at the door.)

Jan Biresch, Medical Advocate for Laurel House, will be presenting with other colleagues from throughout the community, including the PA Coalition Against Rape, Victim Services of Montgomery County, a sexual assault nurse examiner from Abington Memorial Hospital, and Mission Kids, a new nonprofit created by the collaborative effort of the Montgomery County District Attorney, the Police Chiefs of Montgomery County, and the Montgomery County Office of Children and Youth to help ease the criminal justice process for abused children in Montgomery County.

Continuing Education Credits Available

"This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation."
There will be 5 Contact Hours of nursing credits offered for those completing the entire program and responding to the evaluation sheet.

GIVE TO LAUREL HOUSE

Your generous gift allows Laurel House to continue providing shelter, counseling, legal services, support to law enforcement, medical advocacy, and support groups so that more women have the opportunities they need to rebuild their lives and those of their children.  Your contribution also helps us to continue to increase awareness of domestic violence and educate others about the warning signs of abuse.

You can make your gift securely online by visiting www.laurel-house.org and clicking on the Donations tab on the left.

Also, remember to check with your employer to see if there's a matching gift program available.   Many businesses such as Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, AllState, Aetna, and Progressive Insurance - just to name a few - have established such programs, allowing your donation to Laurel House to make even more of a difference to people affected by domestic violence.
