Greetings!
April is a time to appreciate the briefness of the spring season, acknowledge the beauty and gifts of trees, and recognize our capacity for compassion with creation. It is also the month to observe International Earth Day in which I'd like to share the following Earth prayers by Thich Nhat Hanh.
Water flows from high in the mountains.
Water runs deep in the Earth.
Miraculously, water comes to us, and sustains all life.
Water flows over these hands.
May I use them skillfully to preserve our precious planet.
Joyfully, Kim Walsh ~ Executive Director

9 Lives -Yard Sale
Sunday, April 10th (9:00 to 12:00 PM) Roosevelt Center, Greenbelt Maryland. All good old things need a loving home, so don't let your attic, shed or cupboards fill up with things you no longer use or need. Recycle them to a new home where they will be appreciated and used. The 9 Lives-Yard Sale serves as the place for the good old stuff to find someone who is looking for just such an item. So look around and find the good stuff that has "more lives to live", and donate it to the 9 Lives- Yard Sale. HOW TO DONATE ITEMS: A representative of CHEARS will pick items up on 4/9, or, if you prefer, you can bring items directly to the sale. Let us know which option works for you, and we will work out the details with each of you. You can contact the Stone Soup Chef (Richard) at 202-664-7572 or email stonesoupchef@live.com.

How Much Food Could
GREENBELT Grow?
Did you know that the Greenbelt Towns original 1930s design provided for a separate food garden allotment for each townhouse; and that it was planned that there would be local farms ringing the town whose farmers would be able to sell their locally grown food to local residents. Scientific knowledge about peak soil, peak oil, climate change, and negative health effects of much of the food on grocery store shelves has raised new concerns with Food Security issues in 2011.
For more info, contact, Lore Rosenthal, Greenbelt Climate Action Network, lore@simplicity-matters.org
GCAN hopes to host one or more of the following discussion circles, as interest is expressed.
- "WeCanSaveEnergy" (support group)
| GCAN plans to host a Reel Mower Sharpening Clinic at the upcoming Greenman Festival. If you have a reel mower that needs sharpening, please email Lore to get your name on the list. |

The Tom Wisner Legacy Working Group will hold its next bi-annual meeting in early April to honor the first anniversary of Tom's passing and to carry on the work of making Tom's legacy available to the public. Sara Ebenreck Leeland, co-founder of Chestory, has edited a book of Tom's writings that articulate his vision for the Chesapeake. The book's title is Gather 'round Chesapeake: Tom Wisner's Vision. It will be published in September, 2011 and we are planning a number of book signings and performances of Tom's music throughout the Bay area.
The Chestory Archive project will move forward with the assistance of an intern funded by the Chesapeake Conservation Corps. The children's songbook of Tom's music is also in the planning stages. The "Art of Healing the Chesapeake - A Tribute to Tom Wisner" traveling art exhibit, featuring Tom's own art work and the children's collages made by his students, ended its two month showing at the Calvert Marine Museum. If you would like to sponsor the art exhibit, a book signing event, or a live performance of Tom's music featuring the musicians who helped Tom record his CD's - Teresa Whitaker, Frank Scwartz, Mac Walter and John Cronin, contact Joan Clement chestory@gmail.com or write to Chestory, 506 Elm Ave. Takoma Park, MD 20912. Gardens
Messages from Mother Earth
Call for Entries ~ Visual Artists, Poets and Writers

All ages are invited to become part of the Green Man Festival, for a two month long exhibit at the New Deal Cafe during May and June, 2011.
This year's exhibit theme about gardens from Mother Earth asks you to connect your senses and imagination to all kinds of messages about our world. They can be found in small spaces tucked away on windowsills, in yards, at the edge of dense forests, along riverbanks or beside lakes--wherever the Green Man goes-- even on a walk around your neighborhood in what is green and growing.
When you discover one of Mother Earth's gardens--ask how she is doing. Is she hopeful? Colorful and fragrant? Peaceful? Does she welcome the wild things and invite fairies? Perhaps she simply needs your help. By including materials such as recycled glass, nontoxic paints, organic fabrics and dyes, mosaics, crayons, pencils or other goods, make some Earth friendly art about what Mother Earth has to say. Poetry and stories printed on recycled paper, or pages from a journal are possibilities. Perhaps photography or a terrarium will become her voice without words.
Instructions for submitting art...
All wall art must be ready to hang (framed and secured by wire). Include title, price if being offered for sale, and contact information for the buyer. A display case is available for 3 dimensional pieces no larger than 10"x 10".
