PASA Newsletter December 2010

Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) featured us in the November/December 2010 Issue of their newsletter. Founded in 1992, PASA's consistent and driving vision has been to transform agriculture and food systems in Pennsylvania and beyond in a way that makes farms more viable, improves the land and restores the health and well being of all.

In February, 2009  we attended our first PASA  Farming for the Future Conference.  It gave us inspiration and hope in our  farming endeavors and plugged us into a network of folks working with similar goals.  This article provides a bit of our history and some insights into our thinking.  Click here to download a pdf of the article and read the whole thing.

Farm Workday this Saturday!

We recently got selected to participate in a NESARE funded research project: Cultivation of Shiitake Mushrooms As An Agroforestry Crop For New England! As a consequence we will be adding some logs to our operation and need help with the harvest. Logs are typically cut in winter and inoculated in spring. For those interested in helping out and learning a bit about the process, please come and join us on Saturday, January 22nd starting at 10 AM.  RSVP for this event by calling (814-839-4962) or emailing us before Friday.  Come prepared for spending time outdoors in the cold and please bring a dish to share for lunch.  Overnight stays are also possible if you are coming from far away.

Edible Forest Gardens

A Nine-Day Forest Garden Design Intensive with Dave Jacke and Friends!

April 15-24, 2011

Forest ecosystems exhibit many beneficial properties we humans would be wise to emulate in our culture, agriculture and horticulture: they maintain, renew, fertilize and propagate themselves without human inputs; they build, store, and conserve clean air, clean water, nutrients, soil quality, and biodiversity; and they exhibit stability, resilience, and adaptability.  These qualities emerge from the dynamics of the forest as a whole system, not from any one or more of the elements that comprise the forest alone.  To design productive edible ecosystems that express these same qualities, we must understand forest structures, functions, patterns, and processes and use this knowledge wisely. We look forward to your feedback, visits, and emails as we develop our communications regarding the activities at Wild Meadows Farm!
