Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
We thought it only fitting to send out our latest newsletter at the time of the Mid-Autumn Festival (also known as the Moon Festival or Lantern Festival, celebrated this year on September 30th). One of the most important yearly traditions in Chinese, Taiwanese and Vietnamese cultures, this harvest celebration is commemorated by lighting colorful floating lanterns and eating delicious pastries called mooncakes.

The festival is also considered a highly auspicious time for matchmaking - which makes it the perfect time of year for finding your interior decor "soul mate" in our online gallery!
Vintage Eclectic Design Made Easy

Chinese Cabinet and Lamp Blend with European and American Antiques

Fall is finally here! With it comes not only the requisite colorful foliage and comfy sweaters, but also, for many of us, the urge to do some redecorating. Luckily, one of the hottest trends for Fall 2012 happens to be one of our favorite interior design looks, and a great way to revamp on a budget - vintage eclectic. The vintage eclectic look is defined by combining pieces from different eras and locales to create a unified whole; it's amazing how adding in just a few new accents can change the entire look and feel of a space.

Begin by understanding your space - how is it used, who uses it, and what kinds of furniture will it require to function properly? Next consider existing room elements - what items do you adore, and which would you gladly replace? Let your favorite pieces, old and new, guide you in creating an emotionally impactful space. Keep accessories meaningful to cut down on clutter and maintain visual harmony.

Some simple ideas for incorporating oriental furniture into your vintage eclectic interior:

Most of all, remember that you don't have to go overboard with Asian accents to have a definite Asian theme running throughout the space. Don't settle on clich motifs like the color red, dragons, tea pots, and scroll paintings - dig deeper to find the pieces that express your personality while creating a space you just love to call home.

Current Obsession:
Wedding Carrying Box - Shanxi Province, China
Antique Chinese Wedding Dowry Chest
Sometimes we can't help but get giddy when it's time to unveil our newest extraordinary find. It's even easier to get excited when it's something as gorgeous as this museum quality piece. This antique wedding carrying box isn't the first of its kind to grace our collection, but it's certainly one of the most intricate examples we've seen to date.

Created around 1800, this lovely piece once Antique Chinese Wedding Dowry Chest - open belonged to a bride in Shanxi Province, China. Traditionally, a chest like this one would have carried the bride's dowry or food for the wedding feast. This one was transported by running a carrying pole through the square hole in the center of the iron handle, and thanks to an ingenious locking mechanism, the carrying pole also completely secures the chest's containers while in transit.

We love that this piece has much of its original lacquer and all of its original iron work, including handles, flat work and nail heads used throughout the box. The construction of the chest's four compartments allows each to be accessed on either end by shifting the compartment above in a different direction. This versatile piece is quite sturdy, and presents the opportunity for stylish storage in any dcor! Read more...

Lily's Antiques in
Beijing, China

It is always fascinating to be able to admire historical treasures dating back 100 to 300+ years in person, using all of one's senses to truly enjoy each piece. It is even more thrilling to have the chance to visit a sizeable Asian showroom of such pieces, then select just the right ones to bring back for our customers. One of our favorites of these veritable treasure vaults is Lily's Antique Furniture showroom, just outside of Beijing, China.

Lily is one of the most respected antique furniture dealers in Beijing, and always makes our trips to her showroom stand out. During our most recent visit, we brought a tour group along, and we were so pleased when Lily graciously offered to present a history of Chinese antique furniture to the group! Read more...
