Greetings!

In a speech given at the Philadelphia State House on August 1, 1776, Founding Father Samuel Adams exhorted those who cherished freedom to rise to the call before them to defend their fledgling nation and the principles of liberty and self-determination embodied in the Declaration of Independence. Said he, "Contemplate the mangled bodies of your countrymen, and then say, 'What should be the reward of such sacrifices?' Bid us and our posterity bow the knee, supplicate the friendship, and plough, and sow, and reap, to glut the avarice of the men who have let loose on us the dogs of war to riot in our blood and hunt us from the face of the earth? If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!"

In the nearly 235 years since he uttered that call to arms, millions of American men and women have served in our armed forces, heeding that eternal call to vigilance and defense of all we hold dear. They have fought valiantly so that their children and future generations would continue to share in that heritage our forefathers bequeathed to us. From the fields at Antietam to the fields of Vietnam, from Bull Run to the Bulge, from Yorktown to Fallujah, our brave men and women have sacrificed their blood, sweat and even their lives if necessary, so that their children may live in peace. They have done so oftentimes with low pay, little time with family, in the most deplorable of conditions. Yet they do so and have done so of their own volition, with little complaint.

This Saturday we honor those men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we cherish. Please join us for a brief tribute to the fallen at our BCRP headquarters, with comments by former U.S. Army military intelligence officer Gerry Purcell. Following his comments, we will adjourn the meeting and will be traveling to the Georgia National Cemetery for the Memorial Day observance. We encourage all to come join us as we honor the fallen, those lost to us in the animating contest of freedom, without whom we would not enjoy the freedoms we have today.

Sincerely,

Louis DeBroux
