Greetings!
We now come to the end of the second month of the new year, and we can now say with near certainty that Barack Obama, despite his lofty centrist rhetoric of late, will not be moderating his far-left positions on policy. Despite acknowledging the "shellacking" his party took for staying in lockstep obedience to his agenda, he seems determined to, in his own words, be a great one term president rather than a mediocre two term president. Of course, most Americans have a far different definition of what constitutes "great".
Contrary to his State of the Union comments admonishing us that we need to get serious about controlling the deficits, Obama earlier this month proposed a gargantuan $3.73 trillion budget which actually increases spending and leaves us with another $1.6 trillion or so in new debt. Within the next week we will hit the statutory national debt ceiling of $14.3 trillion, and we will be faced with the prospect of shutting down government if a compromise is not reached.
During the campaign season, Republicans promised to cut $100 billion in spending the first year if they regained control of the House of Representatives. It appears that some Republicans did not realize how seriously those that elected them took that promise, because they seemed unprepared for the backlash they received when they initially proposed only about $30 billion in spending cuts. Going back to the drawing board, they now propose about $60 billion in spending cuts (which meets their promise on a pro-rated basis since the current fiscal year is about half over), with even more to come in next year's budget.
So far, President Obama has promised to veto any spending bill that makes cuts to "important" services and programs. Yet because of the approximately 25% increase in federal spending over the last two years (higher when you factor in the non-stimulating "stimulus" bill), the record $60 billion in cuts represents only a miserly 3% of the proposed budget, and doesn't come close to putting a dent in the deficit, much less the total national debt.
In short order we'll find out who will blink first, Obama and the Democrats, or the new Republican majority in the House. It will be critical to control the message. Obama and the Democrats have already begun to paint any cuts as heartless and painful, and they will trot out story after story about somebody who will starve to death or go without medicine or lose their jobs if even a single penny is cut from the budget. Each of us have a responsibility to enlighten our friends and neighbors to the truth. And the truth is that Obama's budgets leave us with an additional $1 trillion per year in NEW deficits (and that is assuming a very, very optimistic growth rate, a rate which so far has no basis in reality).
The bottom line is that the federal government is spiraling towards insolvency, and a number of states are already there. Taxing the evil rich at 100% of earnings would not come close to ending the deficits. The only answer is to get spending under control and reduce the size and scope of government. Each of us has a part to play, and a vested interest, in making that happen. |
The new House majority enjoyed by the Republicans is a good first step, but it is only that...a first step. Obama and the Democrats are determined to stay the course no matter how destructive it is. Republicans have an opportunity to regain control of the Senate and the presidency in 2012, but it is going to take a tremendous amount of effort, and each of us working to get out the message, to remind people every day of what continued Democrat control in Washington means.
While the fight rages on at the national level, there is reason for optimism here in Georgia. Though we are facing additional budget cuts, it appears that we have a good handle on how to make those cuts with the least amount of pain possible. At the tip of that spear is the Zero-Based Budgeting bill, which returns 1/4 of all department budgets to $0 each year and makes them justify every dollar they spend. Currently, the previous year's budget is the baseline for this year's budget, and departments only have to justify the budget increase. This allows programs and agencies whose purpose is obsolete, or which have bloated budgets, to be pared back. The more we can cut government spending, the more we can return those dollars to the checkbooks of the taxpayers.
Senators Bill Heath and Barry Loudermilk, along with Representative Coomer, are helping lead the charge in Georgia to make it a very inhospitable place for illegal aliens. Georgia faces a heavy burden every year in paying the cost of education, health care and other government services for illegals. The damage is compounded by the fact that illegals take many of the unskilled labor (and some skilled labor) positions that would normally be filled by Georgia's citizens. Not only does this increase unemployment, it depresses the average wage earned by legal workers. A strong illegal immigration bill will go a long way towards reducing crime and the cost of government services. These gentlemen are to be applauded for the hard work they are doing, work which is not very popular among certain groups that benefit from the status quo.
Locally, for those wanting to get involved and make a difference, the Bartow County Republican Party county convention will be held Saturday, March 12th. Although the delegate list is set, all are welcomed to come and join the event. For those not familiar with the actual political process, this is a great opportunity to get your feet wet and have your voice be heard. On a side note, I'd also like to offer our congratulations to former Rep. Jeff Lewis, one of Bartow County's own, for his election to the Georgia DOT Board! We are proud to once again have him representing the interests of Bartow County citizens. |

Must-See TV
This brilliant commercial was put together by the Wisconsin GOP, asking for help locating the "fugitive" Democrat state senators who fled the state in order to avoid a tough vote on the union/budget crisis.
Say it ain't so, Joe! MSNBC's "Morning Joe" makes a shocking discovery...that the liberal media has been biased in the way it portrays the TEA Party protests and the union protests in Wisconsin.
I think this is called "missing the big picture". Georgia's own Rep. Tom Graves calls for not only defunding but fully repealing the Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act (aka "ObamaCare") because it raises costs and reduces access, not to mention the fact that it is unconstitutional. Democrats whine that using the term "ObamaCare" is disparaging of the president. Granted, many Americans detest Obama, but just saying his name doesn't qualify as an epithet.

A Little Dose of Humor
This old video shows an exchange between reporter Sam Donaldson and Ronald Reagan. Donaldson points out that Reagan has blamed the Congress for the continuing recession, and asks if he accepts any of the blame himself. Reagan admits that he must accept some of the blame, but it is the "why" that will have you laughing. The damage done to the economy by Democrats has not only impacted Americans and other countries around the world, it has even caused suffering among evil, intergalactic warlords... |

Reading for Extra Credit
I couldn't make this stuff up if I wanted to...the federal government passes a new regulation requiring dairy farmers to develop emergency response plans and file them with the government to show that they can adequately respond to...SPILLED MILK! I am not kidding.
Coincidence? The federal government takes over GM, and then launches an investigation into Toyota for accelerators sticking and causing accidents. Transportation Sec. LaHood warned Toyota drivers to park their cars. More than 12 million cars were recalled, Toyota saw a 39% drop in profits, their execs were grilled by Congress. All headline news. A new report quietly finds it was all driver error, or "pedal misapplications". Will the government fix the damage to Toyota's earnings and reputation? Not likely! |
