Congratulations to the newest member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Tom Graves! Tom won the special election to replace Nathan Deal in the 9th District, who resigned his seat to run for the office of governor. Tom has been a stalwart conservative in the Georgia Legislature and will represent well the people of Georgia in the U.S. House. Word has it that he has already annoyed Speaker Pelosi, which sounds like a great start to me. Tom has been assigned to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure

In an effort to continue their outreach program to make sure everyone in the U.S. gets a vote (even illegal aliens and felons), the U.S. Justice Department has yet again turned down a law passed in Georgia requiring a photo ID in order to vote, claiming it disproportionately discriminates against minorities. Oddly enough, the news has been lacking in stories of lawsuits being filed against other entities that require photo ID's, such as banks, drug stores, Blockbuster Video and the DMV. Georgia filed suit yesterday in an attempt to force the Justice Department to approve the voter registration requirements, which have already been approved in other states with similar requirements. The governor had to go around current Attorney General Thurbert Baker, who refused to file suit. Baker is a nominee for governor on the Democrat primary ticket.

Greetings!

We are almost to the July primary season, which will be followed by the much anticipated November general elections. The landscape is covered with yard signs for a plethora of candidates, all seeking the most cherished of prizes...your vote. Over the next few weeks you will see these signs, get literature in the mail, and maybe get volunteers showing up at your door to ask you to vote for their favorite candidate.

Though you've heard the phrase used so often, this may be the most important vote of your lifetime. We have a national government that is dominated by Democrats. They have used not only their majorities, but archaic parliamentary tactics, bribes, threats, arm-twisting and whatever else is needed to pass their increasingly unpopular agenda. The results have been catastrophic. Trillion dollar annual deficits, an endless parade of bank bailouts, takeovers of the financial, insurance, auto and student loan industries, just to name a few. Complete incompetence in dealing with issues of homeland security and national defense. Corruption; not only did Obama and Pelosi not end the "culture of corruption", they have filled that swamp to overflowing.

At the state level Republicans hold control, but that control was not enough to pass wonderfully conservative, limited government bills. The JOBS bill was vetoed again, as was David Schafer's Zero-based Budgeting Act, the "Sunset Law" and numerous other bills. The merits of each veto can be debated, but there is no doubt that some good bills, bills which reduced the size and scope of state government, bills which increased personal liberty, bills that brought state government more in line with constitutional principles, were not signed into law.

The fact is that while the governor is a Republican and has made noteable strides in streamlining government in certain areas, he is not as conservative as many of us would like. He is better than the Democrat governors that came before, but there are still some significant philosophical differences between him and many at the grass roots level.

Please do not take this as a wholesale disparagement of the governor. He has done a number of very good things while in office. However, we need to do more. I have been inundated with comments from many of you expressing your frustration when policies we greatly support can't seem to make it into law, even when our party has the majority in both houses of the legislature and the governorship.

So what can you do to reverse this? Get involved! This year there are plenty of candidates to choose from. There are incumbents who are being challenged, there are open seats from retiring legislators or legislators seeking a different office than the one they currently occupy, etc. It is your responsibility as a citizen to go and research your candidates to find the ones that most closely represent your values. It is up to you to stay in contact with them after the election as well, to let them hear your views on various issues and legislation. Trust me, they are getting pressure from various interest groups to pass legislation amenable to those groups, and they need to hear from you as well. Sometimes that will be to express concern for the way they may be leaning on a piece of legislation, other times it will be to express your appreciation and support for what they have done.

I have heard many people express cynical views that it doesn't really matter who they vote for because all politicians are corrupt. I can testify that is not the case. In fact, I became involved with the Bartow Republicans after I decided to volunteer to campaign for Representative Barry Loudermilk, a stalwart conservative and constitutionalist that is now running for the seat Preston Smith is stepping down from. Barry authored the laws which eliminated the fingerprint requirement from Georgia driver's licenses, he authored an amendment to the red-light camera laws that has drastically restricted the ability of municipalities to use those cameras for revenue enhancers. Tom Graves was one of Barry's colleagues in the state House and has now won the special election to replace Nathan Deal in the U.S. House; and although he has only been there for a couple of weeks, he has already irritated House Speaker Pelosi, which is a sign of good things to come in my book.

In summary, we have an opportunity to move government at the local, state and national levels back towards the constitutional rule of law, as opposed to the current rule of man, in which those with the most power, money and influence control the levers of government.

So go out and study the candidates. Learn their background, their governing philosophy, their committment to the Constitution, and their positions on issues of most importance to you. If you fail to do this, then you have failed in your civic obligation to become an informed citizen, and have relinquished your right to complain about government. Visit the candidates' websites, go see them at scheduled debates and open forums, and come see them this Saturday at the Bartow Republican headquarters as they face off to answer your questions. Do your part to reclaim and restore this nation to one that the Founders envisioned, one in which we are all equal under the law and not burdened by an oppressive government.

We need truly conservative men and women elected to public office. Reagan taught us that the conservative message, when delivered optimistically and unapologetically, wins elections. If Republicans will hold true to that message, not only in words but in action, we can reverse the damaging tide coming out of Washington and reclaim our proud American heritage.
Health Care Reform

Each passing day brings more revelations about the true impact of ObamaCare. Premiums are going up and access to doctors is going down, and virtually every major claim concerning the benefits of the bill are being proven false. More concerning is that we are not hearing much lately from Washington Republicans about efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare. If this legislation is not defunded in 2011 and repealed in 2013 then the damage to the U.S. economy may be irreparable.

Think you'll get to keep your current health care plan? Think again. According to Investors Business Daily, internal Obama administration documents are reporting that as much as 80% of small firms (and 69% of all employers) will be forced to drop their current health plans by 2013, leaving only ObamaCare as an option.

Texas doctors are dropping out of Medicare at ever increasing rates because of the underpayments and headaches associated with the program. The rate has drastically accelerated this year and is expected to continue to do so. This is happening all over the country, and will have a significant impact on patients' ability to see a physician.
The Economy, Taxes and Deficits

I would love to be able to say that the economy is looking up, but it appears that Obama's policies will forestall a true, robust recovery for the foreseeable future. The economy is stimulated by private economic activity, not public sector growth. Government has not one single dollar to spend that it did not first take from a private individual or business. A reduction in tax rates brings a corresponding growth in gross tax revenues, but tax and regulatory burdens stifle economic growth.

However, it is hard to get men and women in Congress to understand that, especially those that have never held private sector jobs in which they were responsible for meeting payroll and making decisions to keep a company competitive. That is why they fail to understand (giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are not intentionally inhibiting economic recovery) why the $787 billion "stimulus" bill has not stimulated the economy, or why businesses are not adding jobs because of the new health care mandate and associated costs, plus new regulations adding to the burden of small business. Not to mention the specter of a federal government that considers itself above the law, illegally taking companies' assets or bullying them until the government gets its way.

As long as the Obama/Pelosi/Reid-led Axis of Incompetence remains in charge, businesses will be hesitant to take risks and add jobs, and the American people will bear the brunt of this liberal experiment. It did not work for Carter, and it will not work now.

The current economic slump is at 29 months and counting, and could last more than five years according to economists. It will take more than 8 million jobs just to return to December 2007 employment levels.
The Global Warming Hoax

Despite the flood of information coming out showing man-made global warming to be a fraud perpetuated for personal and political gain by some, Congress is still working on an energy tax, otherwise known as Cap-and-Trade, or more appropriately, Cap-and-Tax.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) had been working with Democrats on a climate bill but withdrew over issues with immigration legislation priorities (it would have been nice for him to withdraw because the climate science is junk and the legislation damaging to the economy, but we'll take what we can get). However, Democrats are still working behind the scenes to pass a climate bill and have not ruled out using reconciliation or other parliamentary tactics to pass the bill. Democrats know that they will suffer losses in the mid-term elections so there is little downside in ramming through what they can while they can.

The results? Among other things, $7 per gallon gas, according to Joe Leiberman. The thought process is that if the unwashed masses will not accept enlightenment voluntarily then it will be forced upon us. In other words, if we don't voluntarily reduce consumption of fossil fuels, Democrats will force us to cut back by making the fuel unaffordable. This is exactly what Obama promised us early in the campaign when he warned that his policies would "necessarily" cause energy prices to skyrocket.
National Security and Defense

As Obama continues to wind down the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and continue troop reductions (regardless of of the wisdom of doing so when conditions in the field do not warrant it), the war on our southern border is heating up.

American Border Patrol agents and law enforcement personnel are under constant attack from drug cartel thugs and illegal immigrants trying to cross into the U.S. Yet instead of bringing in reinforcements to protect our border, our president, who's primary responsibility is to protect U.S. citizens from our enemies, has decided that those who enforce the law are the enemy. Instead of going after the illegals and the drug cartels, Obama has decided to spend time and energy taking the state of Arizona to court to try and overturn the recently passed illegal immigration law that provides concurrent enforcement authority for Arizona to deal with the flood of illegals coming into their state, bringing with them crime and the associated costs. Apparently, Obama thinks border enforcement is a job that Americans will not, or rather...should not, do.

So obvious is Obama's utter lack of committment to protect the border that when he announced he was sending 1,200 National Guard trops to the Mexican border, the Mexican Embassy issued a statement to illegal immigrants in America reassuring them that the National Guard "will not, in accordance to its legal obligations, conduct activities directly linked to the enforcement of immigration laws." Even the Mexicans don't take Obama seriously.

According to Jon Kyl (R-TX), Obama will not protect the border first because he feels like he will have no leverage in "comprehensive immigration reform" negotiations if he does that. So he is holding our security hostage to his agenda.

Unfortunately, in addition to his failure to protect the border and deal with the illegals, and according to their own internal documents, this administration is "totally unprepared" to deal with a WMD attack on U.S. soil.
Informational Miscellany

Nice work if you can get it...Port Authority cops claim overtime for NOT working during suspensions...and the union leader actually defends the practice.

For all the chest-thumping and browbeating Obama is doing in regards to BP, he sure didn't mind it when BP was funneling over $1 million into his campaign coffers, or when BP was a strong advocate for Obama's climate change agenda. BP has gone from government pet to populist whipping boy.

The cowardly Democrats have blocked an amendment that would have banned the EPA's attempt to regulate carbon dioxide. Now the EPA will be able to regulate every facet of our lives and the economy, all without ever having been given that power through legislative action

And Justice for All...

After spending the entire 2006 and 2008 campaigns railing against the Republican "Culture of Corruption", Democrats are a little less eager to expose corruption now that they are in charge. They created the Office of Congressional Ethics, but now Nancy Pelosi is showing sympathy to her colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus, who have been complaining that too many of their members are getting embarrassed by the revelations of their corruption. They are now pushing for watered down ethics rules...go figure.
The Supreme Court

The Senate confirmation hearings for Obama's Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan start this month, and with Hatch and Graham on the Judiciary Committee there will not likely be a filibuster, despite her anti-Second Amendment stance among other things. But that won't keep former Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork from trying to derail her confirmation

Sometimes the truth can set you free...from your job. General Stanley McChrystal, Commanding General of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, has been relieved of duty after being a little too honest about this administration's incompetence in military matters.

In yet another brilliant article, Harvard economist Thomas Sowell debunks the myth of the causes behind the Great Depression, noting that unemployment spiked briefly after the stock market crash of 1929, but then dropped back down. We did not read double-digit unemployment until a year later, after government began interfering in the market.
