Georgia Outline (Flag)

Even as California and other states are facing junk bond status and a looming bankruptcy, Georgia has held on to its AAA bond rating, an indicator that Georgia is on firm fiscal ground and a good place to do business, especially in this shaky economy.

Credit goes to the Republican-controlled state legislature for making difficult decisions to cut spending instead of raising taxes.

Let's encourage our legislature to bring back the JOBS bill again, and have Georgia's (new) governor sign it this time.

We had better win this water war with Alabama and Florida for rights to Lake Lanier. Failure to do so could mean a $26 billion loss for Georgia. As a fail-safe, Georgia should be right now building more resevoirs to capture the record amount of rain we have received over the last year.

The Georgia Dept. of Corrections is using computer software to track the online browsing habits of convicted sex offenders. And best of all, it is done with no cost to the taxpayers.

According to Obama's HHS department, Georgia will save billions under the ObamaCare bill. And we all know how accurate government predictions of fiscal savings have been historically...

Greetings!

This week we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Tradition has the first Thanksgiving being held by the Pilgrims and their Indian friends in celebration of a bountiful harvest after several years of desolation, death and despair. The first official Thanksgiving proclamation was signed by George Washington in 1789 as a day "to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God."

This year, despite the tumult that we have endured, there are many things to be thankful for. I am thankful for a merciful God, and His son, Jesus Christ, whose teachings and doctrines are the basis of the Judeo-Christian foundation of our law. It is this law which recognizes each of us as sovereign children of our God, endowed by Him with unalienable rights, and which recognizes that government is a limited delegation of powers of collective individuals which grants the right to perform specific functions in our behalf. It is NOT a burdensome taskmaster which rules over us and dictates the details of our lives.

I am grateful to live in the greatest nation in the history of the world, where we have the right to worship as we choose, associate with whom we choose, and to speak as we choose, especially the right to speak and be critical of government when we feel it has betrayed its design. The freedom of political speech was insisted upon by the founders so that the people could be heard without fear of retaliation. I am grateful that our Constitution allows us to replace our government through the ballot box as we see fit, without having to resort to the shedding of blood to do so.

I am grateful for my beloved wife, my four sons and my four daughters, my extended family and friends, my church, my friendships through the Bartow Republican Party. I am grateful for health and strength to work and provide for my family. I am grateful for each day that God allows me here upon this earth. I am grateful for the divinely inspired work of our Founding Fathers, and for the service and sacrifice of those that came before and those who now serve us in our armed forces, without which we would enjoy none of these blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving to each of you, and may God bless you and your family as richly as he has blessed me and my family.
The Resurrection of Reaganism?

There have been some very interesting items coming from the world of politics lately. After Barack Obama won the presidency and the Democrats expanded their majority, there was talk throughout the mainstream media that the Republican Party was dead, and that a new era of Democrat domination was being ushered in. Republicans and conservatives (not always synonymous) were dejected and distraught at what seemed to be an inevitable slide into irrelevance. Democrats, liberals and the MSM (but I repeat myself) were giddy at what seemed to be a thorough rejection of Reaganism by the American people. As I watched the election results pour in, I felt sick as I watched the citizens of this nation seemingly embrace the big government liberal socialism of the Democrats. I looked on in anguish I what I saw as the suicide of our republic at the hands of its own citizens.

Oh, what a difference ten months makes. Recent off-year election results, as well as indicators from major polling firms, would seem to point to the fact that Reaganism is alive and well after all. Then again, maybe Reaganism is a misnomer. What we call Reaganism was not a new philosophy, but a return to the classical roots of our Founding Fathers. Reagan was great not because of his new ideas, but because he realized that there was great wisdom in old ideas; ideas that withstand the passage of time, ideas that hold up through the erosion of our collective memories, like rain which turns mountains into beaches over millennia, because they are rooted in fundamental truths that are unchanging regardless of philosophical and political fads.

These truths were called by our founders natural law, or God's law. In our arrogance we think that we can break God's laws, but find instead that we break ourselves upon them. A few months ago Newsweek declared on its cover that "We Are All Socialists Now", and after the betrayal of free-market principles in the last few months of the Bush administration through TARP and the beginning of the bailouts (not to mention his absolute failure to do anything about non-defense discretionary spending, passage of MediCare Part D and the growth of the government and its entitlement programs), it was hard to argue with that claim. But then the tide began to turn, shocking the political class.

It started with grumbling about the rapid expansion of government into the private sector, the massive "stimulus" bill, a record-breaking 2010 budget and spending increases that made Bush look downright miserly. Then came the TEA Party tax protests on April 15th all around the country, the biggest being at the Capitol Building in Atlanta. Then more TEA Parties kept popping up all over the place, new grassroots organizations popping up like weeds that the Obama team could not kill off. Then there is the plummeting poll numbers for Obama and his subsequent inability to push through his major legislative agenda items despite massive, filibuster-proof majorities in both houses of Congress.

The events of the last few weeks just confirm that the Democrats misread the results of the elections (and that Republicans had better pay attention if they want to capitalize on it...are you listening Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Mitch McConnell et al?). Republicans won decisive victories in the gubernatorial elections in previously Democrat-trending Virginia and in Democrat-stronghold New Jersey. I had to chuckle to myself as I listened to the talking heads, after years of looking at any little set-back as an indictment of the Bush administration, try to spin these results as completely independent of anything to do with Obama. In addition, voters repealed gay marriage in Maine (making pro-traditional marriage referendums 31-0 when the voters are allowed to decide).

In fact, the only straw that the media and Democrats have been clinging to was the Democrat pick-up of New York's 23rd District seat, which has been in Republican hands for over a century (since 1871). Yet if you look at those results in context, it actually confirms the anti-Democrat, anti-socialism, anti-Obama trend. In the NY-23 race, a very liberal Republican named Dede Scozzafava was picked as the Republican candidate by the party elite. This is a candidate that is pro-abortion, pro-union, pro-tax increases, pro-spending, and yet was endorsed by the official party machine and even Newt Gingrich, a man for whom I generally have great admiration, but whom in this instance disappointed me. How in the world can a candidate be endorsed by both Newt Gingrich/GOP party machine, as well as the SEIU, ACORN, and a host of other far-left organizations. This was a case of promoting party power over principle, and it backfired.

Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and other GOP heavyweights endorsed Doug Hoffman, who had to run under the Conservative Party banner. Democrat Bill Owens won with 48% of the vote to Hoffman's 46% and Scozzafava's 5% (she had dropped out of the race and endorsed the Democrat). A third party candidate got 46%! That is huge.

What we see here is that elections results are mirroring polls and party registration trends. Recent Gallup, Rasmussen and other major polls show that about 40% of Americans self-identify as conservative, while only 19% self-identify as liberal. Yet only 21% these same people identify themselves as Republican. Why the discrepancy? Because the Republican Party, after the 1994 Republican Revolution engineered by Newt Gingrich with his Contract With America, took power and then fell in love with their power and their perks, and fell into that Beltway mindset. They lost sight of the conservative principles that got them elected. They supported Bush's big-government, big-spending pseudo-conservatism, and became Democrat-lite, and in some cases Democrat-plus. They gave us ethics scandals, collusion in pork-spending, The Bridge to Nowhere, and TARP. Obama and the Democrats have been winning not because the American people support their socialist agenda, but because they Republican Party abandoned conservative principles and left us no banner to rally to.

There has been a backlash against the Democrats and President Obama. People are waking up and seeing that this growing government is ruining the value of the dollar, bankrupting us for generations to come, and weakening our standing in the world. Obama spends his time abroad apologizing for American greatness and accusing us of hubris and imperialism, and Americans, at least those outside of college faculties and coastal elites, don't care for this. Millions of Americans have died for the freedom of others throughout the world and the only land we have taken, or asked for, was that used to bury our fallen soldiers. We have no reason whatsoever to apologize to anyone.

The question now is, will the leadership of the Republican Party take advantage of this reawakening? Will they be willing to give up some and their perks and power and return that power to where it constitutionally belongs, in the hands of the American people (see 10th Amendment)? Americans have grown tired and cynical of both parties, as evidenced by the growing number of self-professed "independents". I was and am one of those. I joined the local Bartow County Republican Party because they are a group of people that understand that our nation is great because we are a nation founded on Judeo-Christian principles, on individual freedom, and on free-market capitalism. They understand that without a strict adherence to and knowledge of the Constitution that America will soon follow the Soviet Union and other failed empires into the ash heap of history. They understand that without that dynamic we are just North Cuba. This is a Republican Party I can and will support.

Again I ask, will the national Republican Party hold true to these principles if they regain power? It's not enough to fight against government growth and encroachment when the other party is in power. You have to fight it even when it comes from your own party. It has to be ingrained in your mind, in your very being. Samuel Adams once wrote in a letter "No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders."

If Republicans will take up once again take up the banner of liberty and morality they will regain power, and more importantly, restore the strength of our nation. If they do not, and I say this as both an proud American and a member of the local Republican Party, they do not deserve our votes. For my part, I will support those elected officials who support the Constitution, and will fight them when they do not, regardless of party. As Americans that is our duty. I pray we succeed in restoring our government to that envisioned by our Founding Fathers and inspired by Almighty God.
Health Care Reform

As the debate over health care reform continues to rage across the country, I want to say unequivocally that there is no problem with health care delivery in this country. We have a problem with a third-party payment system that distorts pricing and payment, compounded by the fact that the government accounts for about 50% of all medical spending in this country. That is a problem that was created by government in the first place, and their "fix" is even worse.

In the last six months I've had the opportunity to witness personally the dedication, skill and compassion within the medical establishment. On July 3rd my wife and I were at Northside Hospital, where she was giving birth to our eighth child, a beautiful little girl. Having had seven perfect pregnancies and deliveries we expected this to go smoothly as well. So when, after almost 14 hours of labor, monitor alarms starting going off and within seconds other medical staff came rushing into the room, my heart began racing and panic set in. Due to several unforeseen complications we came within minutes of losing that precious child. She was saved only by the grace of God and the incredible skill of the staff, who worked quickly and efficiently to save my daughter and get her stabilized.

The other instance was more recent. My oldest daughter had been unable to keep food down and was losing weight at an alarming rate over the last four months. After numerous trips to the pediatrician and several specialists, we still had not been able to determine the problem, and were advised to admit her to Scottish-Rite Children's Hospital for constant monitoring and more tests. After four days of testing they finally found a tumor in her stomach. The next week we were admitted again in order to get her vitals up to the point where she could tolerate surgery, and last Monday the surgery was performed successfully.

The stay at Northside Hospital was brief once the initial danger passed, but the staff was extremely good at what they did. The stay at Scottish-Rite was 15 days over the course of three weeks. We were blessed to be attended to by a battalion of doctors, nurses and support staff that were not only phenomenally skilled at their professions, but were equally kind and compassionate to my daughter and I. We could not have been taken care of better if we had been in a 5-star hotel. We also met a number of children there with painful, chronic, long-term illnesses, and virtually every one of them had a smile on their face, mainly due to a staff that does everything within their power to make the childen (and the parents) as comfortable and happy as possible, the health care equivalent of Disney World. Rarely have I seen such incredible effort expended at all levels to make sure that the customers (the patients) were happy. So much so that, after being discharged, my daughter and I did not leave the hospital for 2.5 hours as we walked around to say thank you's and goodbyes to all of the people that had taken care of us. What an amazing group of people work there!

So the next time you hear Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the Democrats and liberal media trying to scare you into accepting their massive health care bill, with fearmongering stories about doctors taking the tonsils out of children and amputating limbs unnecessarily, I want you to remember my story here. And then I want you to think about your experience with health care. Do you like your doctor? Your pediatrician? Your OB/GYN? Studies show that most people do, so why the rush to overhaul the health care system? It is about power, pure and simple.

The health care professionals are far and away some of the most talented and dedicated among us. They sacrifice years of their time in study and training to bring us the best health care in the world, only to be vilified and demonized by our politicians. Now that is funny...politicians accusing doctors and nurses of ethics failures and greed.

About 98% of the problems with health care can be addressed and eliminated by reducing or removing government interference in the free market. Why don't we try eliminating insurance mandates, allowing selling insurance policies across state lines, eliminating the third-party payment system, and enacting tort reform. Those few things alone can drastically reduce costs and improve efficiency and care. Let's try those things first before we look to be even more dependent on government.
The Economy, Taxes and Deficits

President Obama and "Gaffe-a-Minute" Joe Biden have been pounding the never-ending campaign trail lately, trying to convince us that even though the unemployment rate is over 10% (and expected to stay that way for at least another year), even though the Chinese are lecturing us on fiscal responsibility and warning that they may no longer buy up our debt, even though many states are running huge deficits, even though the stock market continues to have more peaks and valleys that the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags...even with all of this he wants us to believe that the economy is recovering and all is well.

Unfortunately for Obama, he can only ride the "I inherited from George W. Bush the worst economy since the Great Depression" horse for so long. Eventually intelligent citizens, and even some Democrats, will realize that repeating and doubling down on Carter-era economic policies is a disastrous plan. But even Democrats, who seem to revel in personifying Einstein's definition of insanity, may be starting to wake up. President Obama has announced that he will be hosting a White House jobs summit, a meeting ostensibly geared to working out a plan to create jobs for Americans, but really more about stemming the upcoming slaughter at the polls that they are seeing is likely in the 2010 elections.

I know I am but one humble citizen, but might I suggest that we go back to the Reagan method that created the greatest period of job creation and economic growth in history? You know, the one that started with reduced taxes and government regulation so that entrepreneurs can grow businesses that create jobs? Just a thought...
Informational Miscellany

If your parents taught you well, you've learned that there is no such thing as a free lunch. If the ObamaCare bill passes, taxes on so-called "Cadillac plans" will hit the middle class hard.

The Cato Institute gives us some enlightening facts on the truth of executive compensation.

The Wall Street Journal give us 20 Medical Advancements we should be thankful for, and points out that despite Democrat claims, Americans enjoy the highest quality health care in the world.
...and Justice For All?

Americans horrified by the massacre at Fort Hood are told to hold off on judging the events, lest we think ill of radical Islam. Yet President Obama doesn't even seem to want to learn the truth, as evidenced by his directive to Congress to delay an investigation into the killings.

More proof that Obama just doesn't have a clue...Khalid Sheik Mohammed, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, will be brought to the U.S. and be tried in civil court as if he was nothing more than some random bank robber.
National Security and Defense

I would never have thought it was possible for a United States president to be weaker on national defense than was Jimmy "Peanut" Carter, but I was mistaken. President Barack Obama's actions to date make Carter look like Attila the Hun. Obama is weaker than day old coffee, and America is going to pay the price.

Obama's constant apologies for, and denigration of, America's exceptionlism is supposed to be his way of getting the world to like us again, but all it is doing is emboldening our enemies and confusing and demoralizing our friends. Obama has made gestures of appeasement toward Iran and Russia and Venezuela, among other countries seeking to destabilize or destroy America. Obama has bowed to a Saudi prince and a Japanese emperor, and stood by silently as thuggish dictators railed on America. He threatened and pressured Honduras to reinstate Manuel Zelaya as president after he violated that country's constitution by trying to change the law to allow him to be elected indefinitely, just like Hugo Chavez. He abandoned our allies in Eastern Europe when he abandoned the missile defense shield, leaving them vulnerable to Russian aggression.

Now he refuses to even acknowledge an enemy within our country's borders, radical Islam, even after Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hassan opened fire on his fellow soldiers at Fort Hood, killing 13 and wounding another 30. It took a civilian to bring him down because, as assinine as it is, our soldiers are not allowed to carry personal weapons on base, and as a result, our service men and women were at the mercy of this terrorist madman.

This is political correctness run amok on several fronts. Obama has taken months to respond to Gen. McChrystal's request for more troops in Afghanistan, and each day that passes without them puts those in theater in more danger. That danger is compounded when our Commander in Chief refuses to acknowledge who the enemy is. After the Fort Hood massacre, Obama, instead of expressing outrage at a terrorist attack on American soil by a Muslim, warned the rest of us not to rush to judgement and assume he was a violent Muslim, despite the fact that he had been investigated by the FBI for extensive correspondence with a radical Muslim cleric that advocated jihad against America. The FBI reportedly ignored the warnings of increasingly violent rantings of Hassan because they did not want to appear to be profiling Muslims. As a result dozens of innocents were slaughtered.

As stunning as Obama's calls for tolerance were, equally stunning were the comments by Gen. George Casey, Army Chief of Staff. He said of the attacks, "As great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty as well." I'm sorry General Casey, but you are wrong. The lost lives of 13 Amercian soldiers are a much greater tragedy than whether some Muslim gets their feelings hurt. And if you do not realize that then you are not fit to serve.
The Culture of Corruption...it's the Democrats Turn!

Obama and Pelosi both promised that when they took power they would usher in an unprecedented era of transparency in government. It looks like they forgot about their promise...

The White House directed the AmeriCorps IG to destroy documents related to the questionable firing of the previous Inspector General, Gerald Walpin, who just happened to be investigating an Obama ally for misuse of federal grant money.

Senator Mary Landrieu proudly bragged that she sold her vote on the health care bill for $300 million in MediCare funds for Louisiana, the derogatorily titled "Louisiana Purchase". It turns out that she is not the only one that was bought off (doesn't that fit the legal definition of bribery?).

Barney Frank may be a leftist lunatic, but at least he is up front with his beliefs...here he frankly (no pun intended) admits that Democrats are trying to expand government in every area possible
