Greetings!

Is it just me, or does it seem like we've fallen down the rabbit hole and emerged on the other side into the land of liberal nirvana? The swiftness with with the Obama administration, hand in hand with Democrat majorities in both houses, have attempted to move our country to the far left is nothing short of staggering. Staggering in its speed, staggering in its scope, and staggering most of all in its unbridled arrogance. It's as if the love child of Karl Marx and Jimmy Carter was bitten by a radioactive donkey and received the power of speaking in mindless platitudes and veiled socialist doctrine, and its siren song renders the masses unable to focus long enough to realize that the country will be dashed to pieces if we don't wake up and get the ship turned around.

If you have not listened to the news this past month, you will think that surely I must be exaggerating. If anything, I am understating it a bit so that I don't give you liberally-induced brain freeze. Here is just a sampling of some of the things that have happened in the last month or so: Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano issued a "For Law Enforcement Only" memo warning about a potential uprising of domestic right-wing extremists/terrorists. Wow, that sounds scary! And just who are these crazies hell-bent on the destruction of the country? Neo-Nazi's? The KKK? Ummm...nope. It's YOU! According to Napolitano, the real threats to our country right now are people and groups that are "hate-oriented", such as those that are pro-life, anti-illegal immigration, pro-2nd Amendment, returning veterans, and my personal favorite...those that "[reject] federal authority in favor of state or local authority..." So basically if you are a Christian who believes in the Constitution, you are on the watch list. It's a good thing that Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, et al, are not around or they'd be locked up right now. Napolitano belatedly and begrudgingly apologized, only for us to find out last week that this was not the first report that made such accusations.

On the bright side, if you do get on the watch list and are hauled in for questioning, you can be assured that under the new Obama administration's new enhanced interrogation guidelines, the worst treatment you'll receive is being strapped into a Lazy Boy recliner and forced to listen to an unending medley of Bill Clinton defining "is", Al Gore ranting about the end of the world (but never mentioning the $30k/year power bill at his personal residence...and no that is not a typo), and a chorus of unintelligible ramblings from Jeneane Garofolo, Barbra Streisand, Sean Penn and Alec Baldwin. On second thought, just break my legs and waterboard me. It would be less painful.

What is even more insulting is that at the same time that our new president's Homeland Security Secretary is accusing those that love God, America and the Constitution of being extremists, we are getting ready to release actual terrorists into the civilian population. After Attorney General Eric Holder went hat in hand to other countries asking them to take some of the Guantanamo detainees (we say "detainees" because according to Obama there is no more terrorism, just "man-made disasters"), he was rejected outright and so decided that we needed to set the example by releasing Chinese terrorists trained by Al-Qaeda into our midst. At the same time, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for all law-abiding citizens to register their guns.

As they say on The Price Is Right, "But wait Bob! There's more!". We also have our nation's President going into a Muslim country and stating that we are no longer a Christian nation, the opening maneuvers in a a hard push towards socialized medicine, a carbon cap-and-trade bill that is nothing more than a massive new energy tax that even senior Democrats admit will cause energy prices to, in Obama's own words, "necessarily skyrocket" (see Gingrich testify before the House committee here), and a budget and bailout spending process that is out of control. But even that is really only an expression of Obama's big-government, anti-capitalist, anti-free market philosophy.

Okay people, take a deep breath. Reading about all of this and hearing it on the news might make you feel like all hope is lost, that the country has irretrievably fallen prey to the lure of socialism. It might seem that way, but it is not so. Poll after poll in the last few weeks show that while Obama continues to have high approval ratings personally, approval ratings for his policies are steadily dropping. The Republican Party was written off for dead during the FDR years, then again after Goldwater, and Nixon, and they are being written off today. But I promise you that conservatism is not dead. It is alive and well. The problem is that as a national party, Republicans failed to live up to the promises they made to the people that elected them. They got in office and grew the size and scope of government, increased spending, and got caught in corruption scandals. They succumbed to the temptation of earmark spending, and the perks and power they derived from that. They lost credibility as the party of fiscal discipline with the TARP bill and the bailout bills. In short, they failed to govern as conservatives.

That is where we will see success. I truly believe that the Republican Party is the party of the common man, of the individual. If we actually govern by our principles, people will see that our party is the party that believes that every man and woman can succeed, regardless of race, religion or creed, as long as they are willing to work hard. If we actually regain credibility and govern by the principles that we define in our platform, instead of using them as quaint words on a doormat, most Americans will gravitate to that message. We just have to act like we believe it, and we do that by living the principles we proclaim.

Mother's Day

On Sunday May 10th, we celebrated Mother's Day. I hope each of us took an opportunity to tell our mothers and wives how much we appreciate the sacrifices that they make each and every day. I believe the family is the core unit of a civilized society, and today the institution of the traditional family is being denigrated by social elites that would have us believe that government programs and "alternative" lifestyles are just as valuable. However, I believe that George Washington spoke words of wisdom when he said "My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her." No program, regardless of how well administered, can ever do more good in the world than a loving mother raising a righteous child. Thank God for motherhood, likely the most important yet under-appreciated job in the world.
Chairman's Note by Michael Huneke
Arlen SpecterThe United States Senate officially has gone filibuster-proof with Senator Arlen Specter changing back to a Democrat a couple of weeks ago.  I wouldn't really consider this a loss to the Republican Party, but rather an example of what has become of our political system where one changes party not because of principle but rather to stay in power.  This is a problem that our political system has produced and it is hard to find a political figure that will stand on principle no matter what happens to them.  Our country has slowly over time produced professional politicians, unlike what our Founding Fathers had envisioned for this country.  They had believed that citizens should take turns serving their country and that no one person should serve a life time in office, yet that is exactly what we have today.  Senator Specter is just an example of what has become of the political process; first he was a Democrat that changed to be a Republican to run for U.S. Senate because the demographics (Jimmy Carter vs. Ronald Reagan) showed that a Republican would probably win.  Now that he is down by almost 20 points in the polls as a Republican, he switched parties again in hopes of retaining his Senate seat in which he has held since 1981.   This is not an isolated incident, but rather a problem that is throughout our entire political system.

I do want to say that that we do have some political figures who do stand on their principles, truly believe what they stand for and are not career politicians on both sides of the aisle, but they are rare.  One example of a principled politician is State Rep. Tome Graves, sponsor of House Bills 481 and 482.  bannerThese two bills represent and epitomize the fundamental basics of what a Republican stands for, lowering taxes to create more jobs which will in turn create more revenue in the long run.  House Bill 481 still sits on Governor Sonny Perdue's desk awaiting a signature and the deadline is Wednesday, May 13th.  I hope that Governor Perdue signs this bill and have even written him to let him know of my wishes.  One has to wonder with the deadline only two days away if the Governor plans to veto this important piece of legislation.  This bill truly represents the principles of being a fiscal conservative.  Please call or write Governor Perdue today and ask him to sign HB 481.

A Little Good News!

If you watch the news or follow politics too closely, it's easy to forget how much good is in the world. There has been plenty to be happy about though, from lots of rain after several years of drought to advances in medicine and technology. From the world of politics, here are a few good news stories from the last month or so...

After a stand-off between the U.S. Navy and Somali pirates, President Obama finally did the right thing and allowed Navy snipers to use lethal force when the American cargo ship's captain was in imminent danger. Snipers killed three of the four pirates (the fourth surrendered) and rescued the captain.

Arlen Specter delares he is switching to the Democrat Party. After polls showed he would be hammered in the Republican primary, Specter did again what he did years ago and switched parties. For those of us that have spent years yelling at the newspaper or TV as we read yet another story of Specter defecting on a critical vote, this is good news indeed. At least now the media can no longer hold him up as being one of the "reasonable" Republicans (translation: RINO).
May God Bless You,
