One Step at a Time
Every Tuesday my Siberian Husky, Colette, goes to visit a gentleman named Karl. Colette is a specially trained therapy dog and Karl is a severely autistic resident at a local home for the developmentally disabled. Karl's family is deceased and the staff at the home thought that visits from a dog might be good for him as he had been very attached to their family dog.
Karl and Colette usually sit together. He pets her occasionally. If he lies down, she lies down and leans against him. Last Tuesday was a beautiful day and I asked Karl if he would like to take Colette on a walk. He said yes! They walked outside for about ten minutes and then he helped give her a dish of water. The staff member who accompanied us said that in the five years that he has worked at the home, it was the first time Karl been willing to do any of these simple acts that most of us take for granted. A small miracle.
I would like to help stop the conflict in the Middle East, play a role in ending world poverty and help create a more sustainable earth. That's a big agenda where it is difficult to gauge the impact of my actions. On Tuesdays it is nice to be with Colette and Karl - they remind me that we all can do simple things each day to make a difference in the world for someone.
