    FAQs

Are there meds that tend to help inattentive ADD?

Is inattentive ADD more common in women than men? Is it more common than hyperactive (or combined) ADD in women?

Inattentive ADD, which is officially known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, the primarily inattentive subtype, is a form of ADHD in which there is very little outward manifestation of hyperactivity or impulsivity. There is, however, substantial...

Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities in Adults - Telling NVLD Apart from ADD

by Rebecca Shafir, Hallowell Center, Sudbury The Fall 2005 Hallowell Connections newsletter described child and adolescent NVLD and the neurological components associated with this condition. In this issue we discuss Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD) in adults.

NVLD in Adults, as with children, is often misdiagnosed as ADD/ADHD. Aside from their many strengths, (strong rote memory, precocious reading skilss, fine attention to details, excellent auditory processing and retention) adults with NVLD face many unique challenges in the workplace. Besides the discrepancy between performance and verbal IQ scores, another primary difference between most persons with NVLD and persons with ADD involves the relationship to change. Most people with NVLD resist novelty and change, whereas most with ADD jump at the chance for change.

It confirmed that mindfulness therapy, practiced on a regular basis, can stimulate the brain to grow in the frontal cortex area. This is good news for those seeking non-medicinal approaches to treating depression and anxiety, including those who xperience it as a result of their experiences with ADD.

The Washington Post recently reported that "three new studies show that drivers with ADHD using any of the popular, long-acting ADHD medications - Concerta, Adderall SR or Strattera - performed significantly better behind the wheel, and more safely, than those taking a placebo. According to previous research, teens with ADHD are four times more likely to have an auto accident and five times more likely to be at fault...
