Melody Corkhill RN Advice: "Work it baby!"
Melody Corkhill RN
Hi all you Makeup Magic Muses!

Over the past year, I have received many calls and emails from you wonderful professionals all over the US, and there appears to be a common thread to our conversations. It appears that there is a general desire "out there" to do things to give back to the community, and to cancer patients in general; but many just don't really know how. Here are some specific suggestions for getting involved.

1.First do a search of your community. Find out what is available to cancer patients in your region. Is there a cancer center? A clinic? What oncology offices are in your area? Then make a visit to them- poke your head in the door, acclimate yourself, and then talk to the receptionist. Tell him or her that you have a service for cancer patients in your city/town/region and you want to know what is available for them and how you can help. They are more than happy to meet you and talk to you. Don't worry if they ask you to come back at a more opportune time, just set an appointment and remember that they may just need to talk to you at a time when they aren't so busy.

2.Purchase brochures about the cancer patient services like the one published by Kolorsourceand personalize them. Place them in lobbies of cancer clinics, doctor's offices, hair dressers, etc. Give them out at cancer functions. Ask the cancer clinics whether they have a "Look Good Feel Good" program and get involved.

3.And speaking of cancer functions.... What an opportunity!!! Find any benefit in the  area and attend. Call as soon as you find out about it and purchase a table space. Give out refreshments to participants and cancer survivors. Set up a computer with a powerpoint or DVD of your services and allow it to loop while you talk to people about what you do. There are many bike groups like "Ride for the Cure". One of my favorite benefits is a cancer run where we pitch tents and camp overnight. It has become a wonderful time we look forward to every spring. Another cancer benefit our city has is a "Pink Hat Attack" every year. We get together and decorate a pink hat, put on pink boas, dress up, and enjoy wine and heavy hors d'oeuvres while donated articles are auctioned off. You can donate a procedure to be auctioned off as well.

4.Print up a coupon on full color slick card stock for a free procedure to have auctioned off at benefits, club events, and other public service opportunities. Offer to donate a percentage of the proceeds of all procedures during a particular time frame- say the week of the cancer run, to a cancer research organization or cancer patient service organization.

Melody Motorcycle5.NETWORK!!! Work it, baby! Get out there and talk to everyone you know about cancer, your services, and your passion. Be generous. 'What goes around, comes around'! When you are good to others, you are good to yourself. The rewards come back to you in boundless volumes. You will find yourself reaching out to more and more people because you feel better about yourself, and at some point you will find people coming to you because they heard about you, second, third, and fourth-hand. Cancer has far-reaching effects, and none of us knows when it will touch our lives either personally, or through our friends or family. Helping others is actually helping yourself! The best exercise for one's own heart is reaching down and lifting another up.

Carpe diem, my friends. Seize the day!

MRI and Permanent Makeup: Screening Questionnaire
AAM_American_AcademyI recently accompanied a patient to her MRI for headaches. I had done her eyeliner about 4 days earlier with a combination of iron oxide and carbon black. While she was undergoing her MRI, I went in and chatted with the radiologists and asked them if they had any concerns about permanent makeup and MRI studies. Both of them said they had no concerns and that the amount of pigment used was negligible. They said only if there were a problem at the site in the skin of the actual tattoo would there be possible interference. I obtained their MRI Screening Questionnaire just for interest sake. To look at this questionnaire CLICK HERE. Better yet, go to your local hospital and get a copy of their questionnaire. And remember, permanent makeup is not an absolute contraindication to an MRI. Keep this site handy:  http://www.mrisafety.com. It offers everything you need to know about MRI's and permanent makeup.
