Note from Tamara

Dear friends,

We have yet more news for you.

Girls in STEM and Summer Camp registrations are open! Our 6th

Girls In STEM is March 26th; this year, we're expecting up to 500 4th through 8th grade girls from around Central Texas! We are planning more than 30 dynamic, hands-on workshops led by amazing women who work in STEM.

Summer Camp at Girlstart, for the first time, will also include mini-camps for girls going into the 3rd grade in fall 2011, as well as a camp for 9th and 10th grade girls. The range of camp themes is, as ever, engaging for girls at the same time it builds skills and interest in STEM. From Designer Girl to Camp Hermoine, we've got your summer covered with fun, yet meaningful programming.

We're pleased to be presenting three sessions as part of the

STEM 2011 Conference being held in Austin next week. We'll be posting news and photos to our blog! And the following week, we will be conducting a week-long training for 32 teachers in underwater robotics, at National Instruments in Austin. This is a partnership with the Texas Girls Collaborative Project and Women in Engineering Program at UT Austin, and we're thrilled to participate. Video clips of the underwater robots will also be featured on the blog!

We're also putting the final touches on a new website. We'll let you know first when it's ready. In the meantime, please register for Girls in STEM and Summer Camp, and check out our work through the blog. Also, our new program catalog is a great way to explore Girlstart!

We'll update you on our Girlstart After School expansion in our next issue!

Best wishes from all of us!

Tamara

p.s.: To prepare for Summer Camp, we'll be working on some modest renovations at our building. If you'd like to help, or know anyone who might, we will be looking for in-kind contributions and volunteer help.

Thank you!

Volunteer Spotlight
Thank You!

Girlstart had a gift-wrapping table set up at Book People throughout the holiday season. Thanks to an incredible group of volunteers from the National Charity League who wrapped books for us and donated their tips to our programs. We are so grateful to have such wonderful volunteers help and support Girlstart programs!

Workshop Leaders Wanted!

It's that time again! We are looking for workshop presenters for ourFish girl annual Girls In STEM Conference, which will be held on March 26, 2011.  This one-day conference gives 4th - 8th grade girls the opportunity to learn about exciting careers from professional women. The highlight of each workshop is a hands-on activity that shows the girls how much fun a science, technology, engineering or math career can be! If you are interested please click here and complete the Presenter Registration form to submit a workshop idea and be a part of this truly impactful day.

Girls In STEM Event Volunteers

There are others ways to get involved at our Girls In STEM Conference. We need approximately 100 general event volunteers to make this day run smoothly; from assisting workshops to chatting with girls during lunch.  Please complete our event volunteer application here: http://www.formsite.com/girlstart/form47/index.html

Did You Know?

Did you know that the trees of a tropical rain forest are so densely packed that rain failing on the canopy can take as long as 10 minutes to reach the ground? This summer girls will discover the many wonders of the rain forest at our Tropical Paradise camp. Registration is now open so don't miss out! www.girlstartcamp.org
