Note from Tamara
Dear friends,

Game ON with Whole FoodsWe are looking to the next five weeks of Summer Camp here at Girlstart with great anticipation. Groups of 4th-5th and 6th-8th grade girls will be engaged in the medical sciences! Next week's Girlstart Clinic starts with a hands-on activity about the largest organ in our immune system...the skin. Congressman McCaul will join us on Monday to welcome Girlstart campers!

We are also looking forward to our weeks of Summer Camp in Killeen. Last week our camp staff worked with 3rd-6th grade girls at the Boys and Girls Club, and we brought our StarLab as a special activity. Check out this great article from the Killeen Daily Herald!

If this weren't enough, we are preparing for a week of Summer Camp at Texas A&M's Vizlab in mid-July. 7th-9th grade students will learn about information visualization-and do it!

A recent development for our Girlstart Summer Camps is the ability for our girls to videoconference with leading scientists across the nation. Thanks to support from the Mills Dennis Family Foundation, we now have the capacity to videoconference using large interactive whiteboards. It's a great way to bring amazing talent to our camp groups. We are grateful for the volunteership of Charlotte Vick of Mission Blue and Emma Hickerson, of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary for their time and energies! You can read about all our videoconference guest speakers in our volunteer section below.

Lastly, I want to share with you some results. We are pleased to report that Girlstart's programs continue to make a difference in girls' lives. Here's some raw post-test data from the first four weeks of camp:

* 94%: Summer Camp sparks girls' interest in STEM
* 97%: Summer Camp girls understand that there are multiple applications of STEM in everyday life
* 98%: Summer Camp girls experience increased confidence in doing STEM activities
* 93%: Summer Camp girls demonstrate an increased awareness of STEM careers
* 97%: Summer Camp girls demonstrate mastery of the scientific method.

We are grateful to you, our friends, who help make these strong and consistent results happen. We will continue to share outcomes of our work to you, but if you would like more information about the impact of our programs, I hope you will not hesitate to let us know. We are always happy to share the work that we do!

Best wishes,

Tamara

Girlstart in Killeen, Texas
This summer Girlstart has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Central Texas in Killeen to provide summer camps to their girls. Over the next couple weeks, campers will explore stellar stars, scrub in for medical camp, discover the wonders of animal habitats and more! Summer Camp in Killeen is made possible by a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans' Assistance. The Fund for Veterans' Assistance provides grants to organizations serving veterans and their families. Funding for these grants comes from a portion of Veterans scratch-off lottery ticket sales. The Texas Veterans' Commission's toll-free phone number for 1-800-252-VETS; its website is http://www.tvc.state.tx.us.

Volunteer Spotlight
audreyThis summer we are proud to have Girlstart alumna volunteering behind the scenes at summer camp.

In addition to our high school volunteers, we have a college intern, Audrey Loeffler, who is volunteering her whole summer assisting with game development, curriculum and more! Audrey is a Project IT Girl graduate and we are so thankful to have her support this summer!

We are also thankful for all our videoconference guest speakers, who inspire the girls with their occupations and causes every week at camp: Syuzi Pakhchyan of Fashioning Tech, Charlotte Vick of Mission Blue, Emma Hickerson of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Dr. Rachel Graham of the Wildlife Conservation Society, and Peter Cook and Caroline Casey of UC Santa Cruz. The guest speakers gave summer campers tours of Google Earth (under the ocean), shared slides of their important work and showed them a live seal training session.
