Greetings!
It was the best of times; it was the worst of times...the opening lines from Charles Dickens' Tale of Two Cities aptly describes the roller coaster business environment and economy over the last year.

To lead better during the recession, Duke Energy chief executive Jim Rogers believes "corporations have a certain covenant with employees in terms of creating an environment where they can grow and develop. Effectively communicating with workers is an art, more of a feel thing than a know thing...You need to listen more to what's on their minds, but you have to talk about the future more because people want to believe in a better tomorrow." (from Charlotte Observer 9-13-09).

What could you be doing right now to turn these worst of times into the best of times for your employees?
LEADERSHIP IN CHALLENGING ECONOMIC TIMES
 Achieve Global Survey Analysis

team pyramidAchieve Global surveyed 250 leaders from shop floor to the executive suite in a range of industries. A key finding was that ongoing positive communication was key to boosting morale and productivity.

The survey identified areas in which leaders would benefit from new knowledge and skills.

Communication -
cited as the top way to motivate employees yet the survey results indicate leaders could do a much better job.
Recognition declined in almost half the companies surveyed. The article states this is "a sad fact when verbal recognition requires no money, just a few skills and the will to use them."
Productivity - the articles notes that "leaders clearly need to rethink priorities, re-assess employee workloads and retool systems and policies for a smaller workforce."

HOW TO KEEP THE FOCUS ON YOUR COMPANY'S MOST VALUABLE ASSETS - YOUR PEOPLE

How effectively is your organization in communicating with employees? The costs to your business of poor employee communication include:  increased employee turnover and absenteeism, dissatisfied customers from poor customer service, higher product defect rates, lack of focus on business objectives and stifled innovation.

Employee Communication Needs.  What and how should you communicate with your employees?  Communication in your workplace should satisfy the three key employee needs before they can be engaged and highly productive.  Employees need to know that... included are facts about your organization and their specific job, who are the customers, specific details about your product or service, who to see when there is a problem.  Master that...included here are the practical skills required to do their job well whether it is repairing a machine, filling out an invoice, producing a part.  Feel that...included here are the interactions that give employees a sense of belonging and self-worth.
