Why We Won
Caterpillar and N. C. Department of Commerce representatives cut the ribbon to open the plant.

The Caterpillar opening on November 16th was an uplifting win for the Piedmont Triad region, not just in terms of the direct and indirect jobs that it created, but also as a confirmation of the region's long-term approach to fostering job growth through collaboration among the public, private, and education sectors.

Rusty Davis praised Forsyth Technical Community College and its president, Dr. Gary Green, for the quality of the graduates who made up the first batch of employees. Later, both the Caterpillar group president, Steve Wunning, and the president of Forsyth Tech referred to the committed partnership between the school and Caterpillar, with Dr. Green pledging that Forsyth Tech is "in it for the long haul."

It is this just this type of partnership between the private, public and education sectors that we at the Piedmont Triad Partnership believe is making the difference for our region's future. Fostering job growth and attracting new companies to the region with a positive business climate; an educated, well-trained workforce; and a collaborative environment supporting development.

FedEx Ground Expands in Piedmont Triad

The Fall of 2011 has brought good news for the area's growing logistics and distribution sector with the opening of a new FedEx Ground facility. The sorting hub is a major facility for the southeastern operations of FedEx Ground with material-handling equipment initially able to sort 15,000 packages an hour, rising to 45,000 at full capacity.

Bob Leak, the president of Winston-Salem Business Inc., noted that the region is a great place for companies with logistics and distribution needs. FedEx Corp. has located major operations in the region, as have UPS Ground and the USPS. In addition to the new sorting hub FedEx has a cargo hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport.

Save-A-Lot Locates Distribution in Triad

Save-A-Lot is welcomed in Lexington, NC.
The 325,000sf Save-A-Lot distribution center opened in late November and will serve the company's 1,300 food stores, including 30 in North Carolina. Company officials said each new store typically equals a new employee at the distribution center, so the more stores that open in the Carolinas, the more jobs that will be created in Lexington. The opening of another distribution center in the Piedmont Triad is a testament to the strong position of the region as a great choice for companies seeking sites for logistics and distribution.

Here is a list of major distribution centers in the Piedmont Triad.
