Triad Transportation Improvements Expedited
North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue announced that construction on the last legs of the Greensboro Urban Loop (I-840) will be funded and expedited, and that the first section of the Winston-Salem Beltway (I-274) is funded and construction is scheduled to begin in 2014.
In addition to the two urban loop projects, construction continues on Interstates 73 and 74. Interstates 73 and 74 will serve as an important North-South connector between the Midwest and Southeast.
The Piedmont Triad has earned several recent successes in the logistics sector due in part to the region's unmatched location and transportation assets. The Governor noted expansions and re-locations such as FedEx Ground, Caterpillar and Honda Aviation as being drawn to the region because of its modern and expanding transportation options.
The Piedmont Triad has been a top choice for companies that are expert at moving goods from point A to point B. We are home to facilities for such leading logistics companies as FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, UPS and the US Postal Service; as well as large-scale distribution centers for Kmart, Hanesbrands, Proctor & Gamble, and Ralph Lauren among others. Because we are at the intersection of an excellent highway system as well as air and rail center, the Piedmont Triad is seen as an ideal a hub for many businesses.
See how the Triad fits at the crossroads of the United States east coast with easy access by road, rail and air to the rest of the country and the world. |

Why We Won
Ralph Lauren Corporation began operations in High Point 20 years ago, taking advantage of the superior Piedmont Triad distribution network. Since then, the company has grown dramatically, choosing again and again to expand its operations and consolidate other locations into its Piedmont Triad facilities.
Loren Hill, president of the High Point EDC, believes that the region's collaborative approach to economic development is a key reason for the continued expansion, "We act as a partner to businesses in the area. For Ralph Lauren, we've worked closely with them to identify locations and infrastructure that will support their success and goals."
The Ralph Lauren Corporation reflects this collaboration in their own desire to bring more jobs to the region they call home, "We're trying to be extremely supportive by providing jobs and opportunities for people to grow in this community," said George Clopton, Ralph Lauren vice president of distribution operations.
The Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina is known as a top choice for distribution and logistics because of its location at the crossroads of major highways, railways and air traffic at the center of the southeast. Logistics and distribution powerhouses such as FedEx, UPS, New Breed and the USPS Bulk Mail Center have located in the Triad for its location, skilled workforce and lifestyle. The proof is in the pudding. Ralph Lauren has shown its satisfaction with the region with continuous expansion:
- major apparel distribution center, office, and technical facility opened in 1991, added the company's global data center in 2008
- research and development facility opened in 1994
- apparel fulfillment and contact center for RalphLauren.com opened in 2007
- another major distribution and logistics facility opened this year (2011)
"We have enjoyed a great partnership with the City of High Point over the years," said George Clopton. "We expanded several times and have had great growth and opportunity, and we found this to be a wonderful place to do business."
