| Message from the President |
Labor Day "celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers." I just want to say thank you for your continued support.
As far as economic contributions, last week's plea for donations was successful! We wiped out our outstanding vet bills! Some of you had trouble contributing and your donations did not go through. We discovered the problem and have fixed it. If you did not get a receipt from PayPal, please try again. It will work now.
Every day we make a golden's life better because of you and that is magical.

| September Orphan of the Month | |
Meet Krystal, our September Orphan of the Month! She is a sweet and playful 9 year old golden. Krystal was placed in a shelter in Florida because her family could no longer deal with her skin issues.
To receive the care she needed, Krystal was flown from Orlando to AGA. Here, she was able to receive proper treatment. It turns out that Krystal has an auto-immune disease that causes her immune system to attack her skin cells.
With all the love and care from AGA, Krystal is now healthy, happy and ready to meet her new family. Known for her beautiful smile, Krystal will be a great addition to your family. You can meet Krystal and our other orphans at Adoption Day on September 9th.

ADOPT A GOLDEN ATLANTA PSA ON WSB-TV
|
Our friends at WSB-TV have produced a public service ad that promotes adoption of golden retrievers through Adopt a Golden Atlanta. The PSA will air exclusively on WSB-TV. This is AGA's first television commercial and we are so proud of it.
Not only do we want to thank all the folks at WSB-TV, we want to thank Dr. Michale Davis and her beloved golden O'Toole.
Because AGA is an all - volunteer organization, we could not have become the country's second largest golden retriever rescue without supporters like WSB-TV and VCA Buckhead Animal Hospital.

Heartworm Disease: Five Important Things To Know
- Heartworm Disease is caused by a parasite and can only be transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. It just takes one bite to infect your dog.
- Adult heartworms are large, white worms that grow up to 12 inches long. They live primarily in the large vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs. Heartworms do not live in the intestinal tract.
- Infected dogs cannot infect another dog and humans do not get heartworms.
- Heartworm Disease is treatable, but it is expensive and the shots are very painful. Dogs undergoing treatment need to be kept calm for 30 days after their treatment. Please consider fostering one of these dogs.
- Heartworm infection is easily and cheaply prevented by giving your dog a Heartworm Preventative every month, year round!
Bloat: The Mother of All emergencies
There are many injuries and physical disorders which represent life-threatening emergencies. There is only one condition so drastic that it overshadows them all in terms of rapidity of consequences and effort in emergency treatment. This is bloat. Click here to learn more.
Mushrooms and Your Dog
Along with an unprecedented numbers of fleas, ticks, snakes and mosquitoes there is an abundant crop of mushrooms this summer. Some of the oddly shaped and colorful mushrooms that you see in your yard may make your dog sick or worse. One of our vet clinics recently treated a dog that died, most likely from ingesting a mushroom. Many of our dogs will eat anything so please go on a daily mushroom hunt and pick up and destroy any that you find. If you suspect your dog has eaten a mushroom, call your vet or an emergency room ASAP for advice.
Reminder - always keep a fresh bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide on hand in case the vet wants you to make the dog vomit.

ATLANTA DOG TRAINER'S HIKE FOR AGA |
The Aga brothers (yes, that's really their last name) and their two dogs at Atlanta Dog Trainer are going on a 100 mile hike September 16-24 on the Appalachian Trail in Maine. They are making this a fundraiser for AGA. So, it's the Aga brothers for AGA! Make your donation of $10 or more and the money raised will go toward sponsoring heartworm treatment for AGA orphans. Read all about their exciting hike and how they - and their dogs - are preparing for it by clicking on http://www.atlantadogtrainer.com/hiking-trip.php. To donate, go to http://www.adoptagoldenatlanta.com/chip_in.asp and click on General Donation. At the end of the payment form, under "instructions to merchant" write in ADT Hike.

Name an AGA Orphan

Many of our dogs come into our program without a name (or at least we don't know their name). Even when an owner drops a dog off at a shelter, they rarely give the dog's name. When we know a dog's name, we keep it.
That's why we have so many Buddys and Jakes and Mollys. After nearly 9 years, we run out, too.
So, for the rest of the year, we are going to let you name our Orphans.
For every $100 you donate to the "Name a Dog" program, you get to name a dog. We will go in the order they are received. Just go to this link and start naming!
