Don't Lose Your Dog on the 4th of July

AGA logo

More dogs are lost during the Fourth of July holiday due to being scared by fireworks. Especially golden retrievers who have sensitive ears and are pretty much wusses!

Frightened dogs have different reactions: some tremble at their owners' feet, others retreat to a hiding place, some try to run off (traveling for miles) and others display bizarre behavior.

According to behavior specialist, Dr. Elizabeth Shull, low-frequency, percussive noises, such as fireworks and summer thunderstorms, trigger wild fear in about 20% of dogs. Under such circumstances, ordinarily well-behaved pets may become aggressive, destructive and/or unpredictable.

Here are some precautions you can take to help your dog(s):

  1. Don't take your dogs to an event with fireworks. Leave your dogs at home in the environment they feel most comfortable.  Do not leave outside in a fenced area.
  2. Make sure your dogs are always wearing well-fitted collars and securely fastened ID tags. Microchips are great IDs too, but remember you have to have a scanner to read a microchip. If you find a dog, go to a vet and get the dog scanned.  If you lose a dog, call the chip company and tell them immediately.
  3. If fireworks are being set off nearby or if you're having guests over for a holiday celebration, find a quiet, secure place to keep your dogs.
  4. Rather than cuddle a frightened dog, try to distract the dog from the disturbing noises with physical activity such as playing ball, doing tricks for treats or anything your dog loves to do.  Remember that scolding or coddling a scared dog will not help. Scolding will scare and confuse the animal and coddling serves to reinforce fearful behaviors.
  5. If the sounds and lights of fireworks frighten your dog, put a t-shirt on your dog and tie it tight with a rubber-band.  It is the same concept as an anxiety wrap.* Vets can prescribe tranquilizers for frightened dogs. Also, some people find that non-prescription remedies such as Rescue Remedy or Serene-um calm their dogs.
  6. If you're going out of town for the holiday, entrust the care and feeding of pets to an adult friend or a boarding kennel you know very well.

If you lose your golden or find one, contact us immediately at info@adoptagoldenatlanta.com with the address where it was last seen/found. Include a photo and any other identifying things such as color of collar/ID tags and name.

Have a happy and safe July 4th!

 Barney Before & After

Barney is a beautiful 8 year old golden. He is a very special golden for AGA because he is the AGA Anniversary Dog and rescue number 2,500 for AGA.  Barney has been on quite a journey with his health and managed to beat all odds to make a miraculous recovery. He is now a very happy and healthy golden whose favorite activity is playing outside with his tennis ball and taking walks. Barney is a polite and loving boy. All he really wants is to have his belly scratched! This sweet, playful boy will make the perfect golden companion for one very lucky family and boy, does he deserve it!

AGA Starts Golden Cancer Fund

AGA logo

Sadly, it seems that every day cancer has taken another of our golden retrievers.  It strikes all ages and all backgrounds.  Cancer is killing golden retrievers at an alarming rate now and as an organization, we have established a Cancer Fund. It is called the AGA Landon Cancer Fund, in memory of a golden who died from cancer way too young.  Each year, we will take all the monies that we collect and we will select a vet school who is doing promising work in canine cancer research with a focus on golden retrievers.  If you have lost a golden friend to this horrific disease you can donate by visiting our website.

Did you know many employers will match your financial donations to AGA and some will provide a financial contribution based on your volunteer hours?

The donation process is simple. First, find out if your employer offers matching gifts by contacting the appropriate person in your organization (HR, foundation, intranet, etc) or by searching for 'matching gifts' online. If you search online you'll find many websites for colleges and other large non-profit organizations that allow you to enter your employer's name and find out the details of the matching gift program and the contact information (note: not all employers participate in this data base). If matching funds are available, you simply provide your donation information to your employer. Please list us as Adopt a Golden Atlanta Inc. and our contact information as info@adoptagoldenatlanta.com  and phone number as 404 364 5377. We have a 501(c)(3) non-profit classification which qualifies us for most matching gift programs. Your employer will contact us for verification and we'll handle the rest of the process.

A huge thank you goes out to all of you who make our organization possible through your generous donations of time and money.

If you have any questions on matching gifts, please contact Linda Woods at linda@adoptagoldenatlanta.com. Also, if you do apply for a matching gift, please send Linda an email so she can make sure we receive the communication from your employer.

Fosters and Foster Coordinators Needed

AGA has a growing need for fosters. You may have seen some of our recruitment flyers in vet offices and pet stores throughout the city. In addition to reaching out to new fosters, we are also asking our former fosters to consider being active again. Plus, we are looking for foster coordinators.

New fosters can submit a form via the webtool. Existing fosters who would like to reactivate and anyone who would like to know more about becoming a foster can contact Deneen Bingham.

Spread the Golden word -- please feel free to forward this newsletter to friends and family who would be interested in either Adopt a Golden Atlanta or being a foster! We are always in need for more fosters... Click here for more info.
