Summer Warnings

This summer is predicted to be the worst mosquito season ever.  Remember it only takes one bite for your dog to get heartworms. Use a heartworm preventive and don't skip any months. Also, it is the worst snake season we have seen. Vets are reporting that they are seeing several bites per week.  Watch for swelling and get to the vet if your dog looks like it has been bitten. Get rid of ivy - some say snakes prefer ivy over other ground cover because it stays cooler. True or not, get rid of it if you can.

Keep abreast of food recalls. There have been several in the past months. Do not feed your dog any snack or chewy or chicken strips made in China. Never give your dog rawhides that are bleached or white in color - those have formaldehyde in them. Better yet, forget rawhide - especially with knots at the end because they come off and get stuck in dogs' throats. Choose reindeer antlers over rawhide. They won't cause digestive issues and are clean and don't splinter.

Another summer danger for your pet is bloat - if your dog drinks lots of water too quickly or eats too quickly, he may take air into his stomach. If this happens, he will go into distress and you will actually see his sides/stomach expand. From then you will have about 30 minutes to get your dog to the closest vet or ER clinic.  AGA logo

And last but not least, make sure to get your dog a life vest when you go to the lake, being proactive is the best way to protect your dog should an accident occur. Check out the Golden Clinic section on our website for this information and more. Knowledge is the best way to keep your dog from danger, stay informed. Have a safe and happy summer!

Each year, the Golden Retriever Club of America recognizes one rescue which has made a significant contribution to Golden Retriever Rescue efforts.

We are happy to announce that this year Adopt A Golden Atlanta won the coveted Starfish Award for its efforts to support and assist golden rescuers in Tennessee. As a result of their moral support and generosity, Adopt A Golden Knoxville began in 2011. Additionally, Adopt A Golden Birmingham began operation in early 2012.

June Orphans of the Month

Meet, Sasha and Annie, our June Orphans of the Month!

AGA logo

Annie is a beautiful 9 year old golden girl and her buddy Sasha is an 11 year old cream colored beauty. These two ladies love spending time together going for strolls in the garden or taking leisurely swims. Like many dogs, Annie is afraid of thunderstorms... but she's happy to wait out the storm with her blanket and toy.

Sasha and Annie are the perfect two ladies because they are easygoing-- they love everyone and everything! This pair has lots of love to give and can't wait to find the perfect home and new family!
